Description Studio lighting. Inspired By P. Horst's portrait of the playwright Nowl Coward, I aimed at replicating the lighting and the mood set by the 1930s photograph.

That's nadir. I used a combination of reflectors, a small softbox and barndoors to control the lighting. Used my brand new minolta digital SLR 5D. Photoshoped the bottom left corner by just burning the edge...like I would have done if i had been in the darkroom.

i guess i want to borrow that concept from both - you and p. horst - since i cant find the original right now i will stick to your interpretation and redo this piece in an upcoming shoot.

that "random deviation" button did wonders for me on this one - this may have changed my whole concept of photography since i was searching for a style in that i wanted to do fashion shots - and THIS is it. thanks to you Altamashu and thanks to dA buttons

you are absolutelly right - i am on my way to getting to know the history of photography in general at first because i have no knowledge of the masters yet. i do not know who is who and who did what and i find it mighty unsattisfactory since i am quite fluent in the ways of modern music and think it is a necessety to know where the whole movement comes from.

so i will have to reference the new guys (photography) with the guys i already know (music) - and here i think that horst would be the glenn miller of photography or even a charlie parker. please correct me if i am wrong with my comparison.

hehe, i find it very interesting that you are comparing musicians to photographers, though you might not always find the correct comparisions......i went to robert plant concert 2 weeks ago...I wonder who he could be compared with....hmm...

Im not too sharp with my history of photography as such, simply because I just forget names all the time! Music im better at, because im into all sorts.

Ive done my personal research in a very haphazard manner, photos that I like, i wanna know more about how they came to be, and look for their information...thats how i found alot of my inspirations like robert mapplethorpe and man ray..etc..theres a ton of photography out there man....and that means a ton of photographers!!!

i tend to remember more about things i know something about and the more i know about something the easier it is to remember the little things like names. so detail causes me to remember the big picture.

for photography history check out this beauty: [link]
its a recording of classes taught by Jeff Curto at the college of DuPage. a fantastic well of knowledge about the history of photography.

Thank you, thank you, a thousand times, thank you... for actually posting a fashion shot, and with a man as the subject matter for once! Oh, and what remarkable lighting... this is unbelievably reminicent of the great Armani advertisements. The fact that this has been so sparsely recognised is very disheartening to me... that things like little anime doodles and photographs of girls in pink and black socks have gotten more attention than this. I'm serious, this is really brilliant work. +faV. Great work, dear.

Cheers!

you know, Mohammed ali jinnah was a handsome man in his youth.
This reminds me of that fact, for some reason.
you've captured the atmosphere well, Altamashu.
I love 30's style suits and such.
I am in possession of suit older than me
Two button three peice, all i need is a hat and i'm Cary Grant
so yeah, I'm faving it for that reason.
