Heh yeah a little. I never can seem to get dark colors to mix well

No it's not the mixing that looks great, it's about light and shadow.

Color like you normally would, but be careful about black backgrounds as you lose the detail of the character in them.  

This can be fixed if you go into layers, multiply your line art and add alpha channel, this makes that transparent.  Then, make another layer your background layer white put that at the bottom of your layer group, then use transparent layers under your multiply layer to add your colors.  If you want to do a background gradient you can do that too on a transparent layer and just use the eraser tool to pull out areas that are too dark.

When I do another live stream I'll show you what I mean, the process is very very easy, and you'll go "d'oh" when you see it.  I use The Gimp for coloring and it's easier for me to "show" you than explain it. It will help you keep the dark shadows and broody atmosphere w/o losing the details of the drawing.
