Description Intruder alert indeed... the Drow in the fae, well she is suppose to be a good Drow. Neila is not my character, she belongs to Raesha on Gaia. This is my submission for the contest there. Drow are hard to color.. white hair and strangely colored skin.. for me anyway. I know this scene is not dynamic, which this year Im going to move forward and try for more dynamic pieces. However, Im pleased, the background is final and I challenged myself with the leaves and grass, which Im still not happy, but am satistifed with. The clothing, all of it, down to the headpiece is the creation of Raesha, so I'm not responsible for all of that skin showing... she does also wear a cloak, but between covering all of her up and showing all of her, I went with the latter.

I see you added that little spider medallion. Actually, I think that adds just enough to the image by adding a little something to look at. Nice touch. ^^

Is it just me, or are the fairies now all glowy? Were they like that before?

eheheh.. the spider medallion was there before and the fairies were glowy But hey, I can never guess whatcha have changed either. I cleared up her face, alot, and changed the nails to a natural tone. It was very dark in some areas, and I was editing it for the person who held the contest, and I liked the changes she suggest, but one.. Ive never been a fan of white eyebrows on Drow, I know some people can do it without making it look like toothpaste but Im not one of them XD Oh well.

My bad! Well, now that I'm looking at it with an eye towards what you mentioned, I still think it looks nice. ^^

You know, I'd agree 110% about drow being VERY difficult to color convincingly. If you saw that wild elf girl of mine named Akira, I originally started her out as a drow. It didn't work out because I just couldn't draw the dark skin correctly. So, you get kudos for even finishing it, not to mention getting it too look good too!

You know, I'd have to say that I'm also very impressed with her hands, too. Hand form alway seems to elude me, and it's very rare that I get it right on the first try...or the second or third. Anyway, the background seems to really bring out the piece, and I'm really quite fond of how the tree trunks twist like that. It pretty much cements the piece as "fantasy."

Nice work.

hehe, thanks! I redrew the hands many times. I never get it on the first try, chloes hands took me many many tries and they were mostly covered up. I tried to take into account your crit on my neck muscles on this one, I think I did anyway. ^^

Yay, i am proud of you, pushing pays off. I really like the trees, and the colours you used are so perfect for drow elves. Not that i know much about them, but anyway, she looks great I hate doing leaves as well. In all my advances with art, i think i have really just regressed in the leaf department. Makes me want to pull my hair out

Yay! thank you so much... I cant have asked for more than to hear that from you^^
Ah,.. you know your art the past year has advanced at a frightening pace. I know whatcha mean about regression, I think it has to happen to us while we force ourselves to work harder and make changes to get better. Oh well! I didnt notice your leaves though O_o... Im sure they look superbly leafy!

SHe's gorgeous! I especially love her hair - you've done an amazing job with it. White hair is sometimes hard to get looking right, but you've done it well. I think her skin looks lovely and wel done on the hands. The background is cool too - the glowy butterflies is a very nice touch and I think the way the light reflects on the trees is very pretty. Makes the picture kind of storybookish!

Ah thanks much!! I really feel its very cartoonish/childrens story too.. riot said it reminded him of "the last unicorn" - I love that movie..

It was funny - I had another dev of her sitting in my dev-watch box right under yours (Artdragon's). Seeing both of ya'll's stuff makes me want to try her too! ^_^

My sister would cry so much at The Last Unicorn. I don't remember the movie, but my parents would tease her after she grew up, saying that she'd watch that movie and then cry, "That was the last one. There're no more!" lol. We're sensitive people!

lol... I still get all choked up at the end of the last unicorn, but its for the romance part. The movie is not really a childrens story entirely, it has a lot of adult story elemnts too, the dialogue and the song lyrics are mature. And where else can you hear Mia Farrow and Jeff Bridges sing?? Hu oh.. art dragon .. dont think Ive seen that entry, but I really doubt Ill place coming on with this entry, usually DnD gamers like very realistic stuff and there were some really nice realistic entries, but hell, I enjoyed this piece a lot and I know the contest holder is appreciative, so that makes it worth it. You should enter too, you do some nice realism stuff!

Go take a peek at hers! Yours looked mighty fine right next to hers! ^_^

I'll have to rent that movie. I must have been too little when I saw it. My husband was watching The Black Hole last night. Ah now there's nostalgia! lol. My sister and I used to even play The Black Hole Boardgame when we were young!

But my favorite 80's fantasy movie is definitely The Dark Crystal. I have it on DVD. I can quote the whole thing. My dad was a geologist, so growing up, we had lots of rocks and geodes and stuff lying around the house. Well, he had this one long piece of quartz cryastal that we'd use to "heal the crystal." Heh heh...we'd stand on the edge of th couch and reenact that whole scene.

I was a dork! But I had fun!

Oh! wow! You know, for all that gray, I think you did a really good job. Using one color like that can make the whole thing look bland, but your painting doesn't look bland at all...I love the trees...you're good at backgrounds! And the leaves and grass are well rendered...It looks kind of like a photo..you know the background isn't in foucus as much as the people are? Nice job!!

alorinae In reply to WoolSocks [2005-01-05 21:41:20 +0000 UTC]

Hey woolsocks! Been a while it seems like. Ah that was not intentional with the trees less focusy.... I tried to make them as sharp as I could, the leaves, well I made them less sharp because the more I defined them the more they seemed too close to the viewer, they are already appearing cllose enough, not really sure how to fix it. I know the grass and leaves.. lots of people seem to do them so well so easily.. but its hard for me, so this is good for me. Anyway, thanks so much!

Oh, I thought everything was exelent! And I didn't think the trees looked out of focus... And I know what you mean about people making their leaves look really good so that it makes you sick with envy...I'm afraid I'm going to have to add you to that list people though...the foliage looks great! yeah, it has been a while! The Holidays took up so much time >.< Hope you had a good holiday season!

Okay, favorite part of this... the butterflies. But then, I'm stupid for butterflies.

This is just wonderful. From the shading of her skin, to the great detail of her hands (excellent work on those). Everythings' just wonderfully rendered. Kudos.

I never know what Drow is. From all I see, it's just dark skinned. :/
Anyway, I like your use of saturating color against desaturated colors. Adds life to the little butterfly and things, and make the drow part of the nature.

alorinae In reply to look [2005-01-05 21:19:50 +0000 UTC]

Drow I think (I could be wrong) originated in the Forgotten Realms/DnD game setting, which is so widely popular with DnD gamers that race Drow is known by people outside of the gaming world and probably used in other game settings as well.... but basically its their Dark Elf. And a dark elf is a mean elf.. like an evil one - have you seen lodoss? Probably Im guessing, they have some dark elves in there. . In FR the drow live underground and hate the elves who live on the surface. Anyway~ thanks so much, I was worried she wasnt colorless enough, so that makes me happy to hear it.
