This is our first time doing 5th edition too. But I don't think I can give any tips. We play our own version of DND, we don't use any of the books. Just remember that when making a decision as your character, you have to consider what your character would do, not what you would do. I'm also an elf, but I'm a fighter, so I'm slow to trust and I'm slightly racist, but I'm loyal once I gain trust. One quirk is that when rolling my stats, I rolled a bad roll, so as a result, my characters intelligence is on the low side, so I have to roll play as a below average intelligence character, which means sacrificing giving my party ideas because my character would most likely not think of them the way I would.
