well i see it 2 ways:
1. the way that 'death' (the skull) is watching out for everybody, seems weird but i cant quite explain lol.

2. the title, 'gate guardian' reminds me of the guardian of hell, you know, a dead creature... the muted colours just give it a harsher atmosphere and makes it more tense, as does the focus
