This is Echo, an ancient entity that walks in the shadow of a figure called the Matron, a young woman who is the newest in a long line of divine inheritors of the nation of Gharna. The Matrons are said to be the spiritual reincarnations of the God-queen,a powerful sorceress who first established the Matronire. The presence of the Shade, an entity that is pacted to each subsequent Matron in childhood and protects them throughout their lives,is kept a closely-guarded secret from the public...

The Shade desires to guard the Matron from danger at all costs, seeking her companionship and loathing all who compete with his affections. Living in her shadow, he exists as a formless being that resides in his own strange realm hidden inside it. He gains a stronger, more solid form--and increasing sentience--the more a Matron gifts him with items that hold some sentimental or spiritual value from herself. Toys, food, clothing, jewelry, sentimental items...hair,flesh, blood....

Matrons are instructed not to indulge the Shade too much, lest they risk him growing too strong and unleashing his wrath against those she might hold dear.In the thousands of years of the Matronire’s existence, no Matron has before given the Shade a fully sentient form--a form capable of speech, of thought, and of planning.... but this one is particularly indulgent. c
