I absolutely love the placement of the focal. This has such a powerful contrast as well. Love it.

I think it would be awesome if you removed the second to right anther and filament (maybe through photoshop) because then it would appear as if a hand were reaching out to grab something, or even a hand that has been stabbed with a nail.

Beautiful capture btw

It's great when you get a new camera!
Beautiful image. Since you've mentioned it, I think that the image is much more resolved than the title.

Change the title back. It was a nice title, and people are jumping to stupid conclusions. Don't apologize, because you have nothing to be sorry about. Flowers don't have a race, and those people are just looking for something to bitch about.

Doodelay In reply to Konoha4kunoichi4Zuki [2011-12-09 23:48:49 +0000 UTC]
Its foolish to allow a controversial title such as that to remain. He wants people to like his photo and comment it for what it is, not dislike it for what it is misinterpreted as.
I am not looking for anything to "Bitch about" and neither are the others who feel as I did about it.
I know its a flower, but symbolism is symbolism and rather it was meant to be racist or not is beside the point. The fact is, the title gave it certain subtle traces. And therefore I believe that the artist made the right decision here.
Ultimately it comes down to pleasing your audience, not pissing them off.
Its nice to see someone passionate about what they believe is right, but in this case I think that you should respect the artist.
He clearly decided that he wanted to change the title, and did. It should be left alone now. In my opinion at least

>tell people to "respect the artist"
>don't bother to figure out what gender artist is
>call her a racist man
This is worse than feminazis who scream at people for holding the door open for them.

The fact that you learned it at all is irrelevant.

Doodelay In reply to Rinnian [2011-12-10 01:53:31 +0000 UTC]
Then why bring it up if it's irrelevant?
Because had it not been relevant to you than you wouldn't have commented about it in the first place...
I think we should just kind of move on here, we really have nothing to argue about rinnian, really o.o

Wrong!
...it doesn't sit well with me that you typed out my username in a sentence as if you're using my real name to refer to me or something. Creepy as fuck.

Sarky-Sparky In reply to Doodelay [2011-12-10 01:17:54 +0000 UTC]
Valid argument, but may I offer a thought?
It could also be said that the artist changed the title because of pressure from a few people interpreting the title as racist (because clearly the word 'white' could only possibly mean skin colour). Those people taking a title innocent in meaning that the artist chose to represent their image and turning it into something offensive and cruel is not respecting the artist.
You talk about symbols... well white and flowers are both well established symbols of virginity and purity. It's sad and 'PC gone mad', surely, that people forget this and automatically think of race.
Now I do see your point about 'pleasing your audience, not pissing them off' and in that respect, the change was probably wise. However, changing the title and bowing to peer pressure isn't sticking to your guns as an artist and is just further diminishing the innocent meaning of the words and the image and it's almost done out of guilt as race is the stronger meaning. It's giving more power to the negative.
Not an eloquent point at this time of night, I'm sorry. But what are your thoughts?

Konoha4kunoichi4Zuki In reply to Doodelay [2011-12-10 01:12:52 +0000 UTC]
I am respecting the artist, in that I'm not assuming she's a closeted racist because of a monochrome picture. The fact of the matter is that the title was just that: a title. There was no 'symbolism' in it unless you were looking for it, and if you're seeing racism in flowers, you need to re-examine your life. Just because that's the first thing a few people's minds jump to doesn't mean it's offensive. Art is most certainly NOT about pleasing your audience, it's about creating something that inspires emotion. The audience is just there to observe and formulate their own opinions on it. It is completely ridiculous for someone to be offended because I will repeat: flowers don't have a race. There is such a thing as seeing racism everywhere. The artist was quite clearly not trying to be offensive, and pressuring her into changing the title because of some imagined form of bigotry is wrong. A note in the Artist's Comments would have been fine. Have you even read some of the other comments? One person was actually saying that it was racist because the white part of the flower was taller than the black parts (which would probably be yellow, brown, or red if the picture was in color). What, was she supposed to go into her laboratory and genetically engineer a flower that was politically correct? Art is about expressing yourself, and she shouldn't let people pressure her into changing it. The reason why the title was changed was very clearly to avoid conflict. Conflict that wouldn't have started to begin with is people weren't being absurd.

I would never apologize and/or change the title of my piece just because a bunch of lunatics are yelling you're a racist because you took a picture of a flower. They are the ones with paranoia and delusions. It's pathetic and small of them to be so stuck into such negative social standards.
At any rate, the darker bits look like a hand grabbing at the taller thing. I totally forget what they are called, so I feel really dumb, but yeah. Everything is nice and soft.

To everyone who thinks the title is racist, try to imagine white as a symbol of purity or innocence. Maybe the artist wanted to be pure and innocent like the flower.
SO DEEP.

It's a shame that anyone would get offended by that title (Seriously? HOW. If it was in color, and was called 'I want to be yellow' would anyone have said anything at all? It's a flower, and has nothing to do with your racial paranoia. |: )
Because I feel that a lot of the imagery, of the idea of the stamen reaching up to the pistil in almost jealousy is just.
Poof
Gone.
It's a beautiful picture, regardless. at first it sort of looked to me like a hand with something coming from the palm.

its not exactly racist its just ponders on the edge of it and questions it and a way it just makes a social comment on races in society , the artist probably didn't mean it this way but it still brought it to my mind and i'm sorry if iv offended you in anyway

It's just a very sensitive topic and the title can piss off people unintentionally. That's all. Doesn't help that the white part is taller than the black parts, it's just a very tricky situation.

I didn't say you were. 'Whoa' doesn't just apply to horses, it's just an expression.
I'm beginning to suspect you're just trying to ruffle feathers.
Which is also an expression, and in this case does not apply to birds.

Since I have a feeling you'll still look, even though you blocked me:
Lol, you haven't ruffled my feathers, I didn't say that you did. It just seems like you were trying to.
But, this is a misunderstanding and maybe you'll realize it eventually. Are we done, then? Seeing as you blocked me over this misunderstanding, I guess we are.

If you think I'm trying to 'ruffle your feathers,' then you apparently get them ruffled pretty easily.
You would know if I was trying to fuck with you. You're not worth my time.
