One of the main streets of the ancient Roman city of Gerasa. I found it unbelievable that 2000 years later, we can still see the grooves worn into the paving stones by the metal wheels of the chariots.Related content

I think the Roman streets were simply masterworks of handcraft: the principles of construction and the materials they chose as well. The only aspect that cannot be regarded in a positive way is the fact that they needed huge numbers of slaves to get this work done ...

As engineers and architects, they were superb. However, it is a sad fact of the history of civilization that so much of the great early works were built by the tortuous labors of slaves.
