I was just watching Captain America: The First Avenger the other day, and it made me really want to draw Cap. I decided to make him in the uniform he'll be wearing in Avengers.The quote is from Amazing Spider-Man #537 where Cap tells Spidey what it was to him to be American, the quote is originally Mark Twain's.

Mark twain's quote was originally adapted from an old Norse Viking saying. But it's a true and beautiful piece of wisdom, no matter who it comes from.

This is what makes Captain America such a great character. He has somewhat of a tragic backstory, Β but that is not what makes him a hero. He is a hero because he has such a strong moral compass. He is just a really good guy. He stands up for what he believes is right. So often especially in recent movie and comic heroes, creator rely on a tragic backstory as motivation. In those cases you have to wonder, if that painful past was not so painful would this person still be fighting to save the world? In Captain America's case I think the answer would be yes. He would still be fighting to save the world because he believes it's the right thing to do.Β

And THIS is why Cap is one of the greatest superheroes of the Marvel franchise. Though his name stands for 'Murica, Cap himself stands for all of humanity. We've seen so many times Cap going against the American ideals because they don't cater to everyone. This quote, along with your image is fantastic! Well done!

Too many people call him a Superman rip off. And whilst there are similarities within the two characters, Captain America is enough of his own character to stand alongside Superman, not behind him.

This is probably Captain America's defining speech to Spiderman, in the fact of the Marvel Civil War and everything going wrong, there's Cap standing by his convictions.
The tragedy is that in the current day, such a speech would not be used by patriots standing for justice, but sycophants who cannot accept compromise.
But maybe that's why I love Captain America so much and why I'm going out of my way to be able to see Winter Soldier: because if nothing else he's trying to live up to the ideals he claims to stand for.
