Description This is a gift I did for my grandmothers' friend for his birthday. I was suprised to see how fast this one took to do!! I think I just sort of got lost in all that fur....it was quite different from my first two wolves I have done so far. Anyways, I was instructed for it to be a wolfs head and thought this one looked particularlly well. He reminds me of someone I know...

hey! i recently picked up woodburning and i was wondering how you get your shading to look so smooth? my shading is fine but it's very grainy from dots due to the woodburning tip... help!

First off, what kind of burner are you using? Is it your traditional saudering iron type or is it the more advanced version that allows you to control the heat?

I find the saudering iron type very difficult to work with, though it is not impossible to use! I am just not talented enough to use it LOL. I use a controlled burner which allows me to adjust the heat so I can get darker or lighter shades.

One rule of thumb...its always easier to start off lighter because you can always make it darker

actually, it's the kind i got at Michael's craft store... a scrapbooking kind? it dosen't allow you to control heat- i didn't know they made ones that can do that! im guessing it's a saudering iorn type though. and i wholeheartedly agree with the start light shade darker rule!

thanks so much for the advice!!!

These are controlled burners: [link]
For the longest time I used the simple Cub burner and I only use 3 tips: The Ball, Skew, and Spear point Shader.
The Cub is a simple, inexpensive burner compared to the other more expensive ones and it can achieve the same results. The only reason I moved up to an Optimum burner is because my grandfather got it for me for Christmas, otherwise I would still be using the Cub

Hopefully that helps ya some, I am pretty sure I know exactly what you are talking about. Some artists can use that tool and get the same results a controlled burner allows you to have but its more about learning how fast you need to move to keep the tip from being too hot. I have been to wood shows where men have used very primitive tools and created images I wouldn't dare dream attempting! So, you don't have to use a controlled burner but it makes life a heck of a lot easier

Good luck with it!! You will have to link me to some of your finished results!

again, thanks so much for the advice! i really appreciate it! yeah, i almost always use the ball point... i've tried the spear but find it annoying. it seems to take longer to warm up! as for links to my creations, i have given most of them away, and don't have pictures! :/ but i woodburned a history project and will post it when i get it back. oh, and if i haven't mentioned before, your gallery is amazing!

I like your almost stylistic approach to the wolf's face. Perhaps a more clear photo would do it more artistic justice But from one fellow woodburning enthusiast to another, good work!

Wow! I was expecting much longer. Your pen & ink technique has really translated well to wood burning.
