She always approaches carefully, head tipped to the side and hindquarters poised to run. He hates that she does that even now, even when they’ve known each other for years, hates that she’s still afraid of rejection. She carries the noble blood of warriors under her skin and the spirit of a fighter and yet she’s still afraid of the common kind.
He’s lost his faith in others more than once in his life. When offered the choice he’s found most choose not to be noble, choose instead to embrace their baser instincts and succumb to petty jealousy and greed. It saddens him that hate and scorn run so close to the surface that a child has to fear the world when she’s still too young to stand on her own. His heart hurts for those he cannot save and so he focuses on the life in front of him.
He greets her with gently enforced kindness, pretending there is nothing wrong because in his eyes the number of legs she carries makes no difference; she still stands under the same sky and breathes the same air as the rest of them. He is calm and patient and teaches her the kindness and beauty in things.
He tries to teach her the beauty in herself but she is still too young to listen, and so he shows her how to flatter others, how to worm her way into anyone’s heart until they too see the softness she carries within herself. Softling, he calls her, teasingly offering to break the hooves of any who make her cry until she giggles at his silliness.
Later, when the threat is real and she’s turned to him with tears down her cheeks and a painful shyness he shields her from the world and lets her have a good cry, whispering in her ears to remind her how beautiful and strong she is. Even later, out of her sight, he confronts the foals and scolds them on their thoughtless words until they repent. If she notices the difference she doesn't mention it to him but her laughter and smiles are all the sweeter for it.
He teaches her that she can stand stronger for her six legs, be moved less easily than the others. He shows her how to be firm and noble and not to flinch from others. Friend, she calls him, a slip of the tongue, and he smiles fondly at her first steps with another where she forgets that she’s different.
She calls him Father later, when she’s at last found her beauty and leans comfortably against his broad side, forgetting like he has that she walks on six legs. His heart warms at her words, carelessly slipped into conversation.
He’s proud of her.
When, even later, she finds someone else who looks at her the way he has all these years he gives his blessing easily, a gentle smile in his eyes. She deserves to grow up, to grow old, with someone who sees the beauty she’s fought so hard for.
