Description So, the people at Meridianito had an article comparing superheroes to gods, or more specifically Aquaman to Neptune/Poseidon. I was like "alright! Something cool to draw!" While Aquaman is nowhere near the top in my list of favorite superheroes, hey, he is one of the JLA's Big Seven. The only time I digged Aquaman was during the fish-hook-for-a-hand years, but I thought that drawing that Aquaman would leave readers of the magazine confused, chances are no kid or parent would've been able to recognize him. I was not going to make the Super Friends version either, so, I figured kids these days, if they know who Aquaman is, it might be thanks to Young Justice or Batman: The Brave and The Bold, I went with that, but also tried to include some details reminiscing (I'm not sure if this is the word I'm looking for) of the 90's Aquaman.

And this is the end result. I'm not showing the Poseidon/Neptune page, because I basically traced a pic of a statue.

Aquaman belongs to DC Comics, obviously.

The word you meant is reminiscent. And you did a great Aquaman! I'm a huge fan so I can get picky over how he's done and I really like yours!

Thank you. Good luck with that project. Takes a lot of nerve to cosplay. I know I would never try it, but I respect it.

Aquaman going all Gladiator there. I half expect him to yell "Outrageous!"

Hehe, I'm missing the reference... is that from "Gladiator" with Russell Crowe? Will have to google "outrageous" now.

Thanks for the comment.

Yeah, the Russell Crowe Gladiator while "Outrageous" was his catch phrase on "Batman: The Brave & The Bold". Although the more I look at the drawing the more it looks like the YJ version of Aquaman (though both YJ & B&B had Aquaman with the beard).

don't forget the hook-for-a-hand-Aquaman! That's where the beard originally came from!

You know it's weird - I supported Aquaman having the beard, but I could never support him having that hook, and I've never been entirely sure why.

It's okay, a lot of people never liked the hook. For me, it looked like they had extracted all the "cheese" from the character, but I will admit it was probably too typical 90's "Extreme" attitude. Beyond that, it wasn't just how he looked, they also changed his demeanor and now was a gruff, grumpy and with a slight superiority complex. Made for good contrast with the other "Big 7" of that time period.

I LOVED the hook! And the beard. And the grumpiness. I can't speak for the stories, but he had a great look...

I was never a reader of his own title, but his personality was perfect offset with Grant Morrison's JLA relaunch. That JLA had everything: grouchy veterans, a rookie hero, the gentle reluctant leader, royalty and simpletons, comedians and guys with zero sense of humor, etc. Perfect balance.

Wasn't Aquaman being written by Peter David at the time? It couldn't have been bad.

This is good! Aquaman has his points (not just big metal hooky ones), and if he is used correctly, stories with him in them can be pretty good. Nice job!

Don´t get me wrong, I kinda like Aquaman, and he is injustly maligned and ridiculed. I never read anyone making fun of Namor, for example. The general public think Aquaman's only power is that he talks to sealife, and that swimming is not a superpower. But he swims REALLY fast and has considerable super-strength to allow him to be under who knows how many atmospheres of pressure.

I know! I went in and read a work-up of all his powers, and taken in context with a story line that allows him use of his powers (other than the talk-to-sea-critters thing), he can rock a heroic showing as good as any other "main" hero, such as Batman or GL. Though I'm not a fan of the New 52, I'm hoping that one good thing that comes out of it is a new respect for what Aquaman can do besides yak at fishes. I also hope they let him stay sane...yeesh...

Thank you! That was more or less what I was aiming for, but leaning more towards the Peter David era.

Sé que va a sonar raro, pero a mí ni de chiquito me gustaban los Super Amigos. Si habia otra comiquita en otro canal, preferia ver otra cosa jajajaja. No había suficiente acción.

aaah si? y el He-Man ó la She-Ra te gustaban?

alexmax In reply to lululetti [2013-01-05 22:54:37 +0000 UTC]
