Description *gasp* Digital work!

This was a uni assignment- we had to take a photograph, and render it in photoshop. We also had to put a separate photograph (not rendered) in the background, but I left that out of the submission, because that wasn't my work at all.

This isn't as good as I would like it to be, because I only had a week in which to do it, plus going to uni, and all my other homework, and etc, so it is a bit rushed. Also, it is my first attempt at a proper digital portrait. I've never used Photoshop to create a full-blown portrait before, even though I've done other things in it, frequently. But I thought someone might like to see it anyway!

Time.... roughly 15 hours, I suppose, maybe a bit more, or a bit less.
Programme: Photoshop CS, Mac OSX version.
Other: Wacom Graphire tablet.

Enjoy. I don't want full-blown critiques, please, but feel free to comment. I'd love to hear your opinions. I won't be working any longer on this, as it is due in tomorrow.

I find people who are just that little bit more interesting than dazzling so much more interesting to draw. I like to try and get their character to shine through, if I can.

Wow...!! The coloring is really good! Especially on the robe and the hair. XDDD I want to become a great artist just like you someday. I'll need lots of practice, that's for sure.

oops
so you did post some up
HAHAhaha
its very good
especially for a first attempt at a portrait.

one thing you could try to do for future reference, is to make it more textured. because thats one of the main problems with digital paintings; they come out too flat and clean...try using textured brushes, or dual brushes for a less obvious effect. but you'll have to play around with them to see....
sorry for the critique ive just decided to be more critical in my art, so i improve.
feel free to get me back next time i post

that being said, its an excellent painting. i especially like the left sleeve. it seems silky and reflective some how. . good!
keep it up!
...and heeeeey she's not holding a gun
hAHha
post THAT one

Alene In reply to Aristocrat-knights [2006-03-08 01:48:54 +0000 UTC]

I wanted more texture, but I just didn't have time The deadline was one week, and I had all my other assignments to do as well.... torture, that is what they do to us, torture!
I like to do digital work like I do oil paints- because I'm allergic to oil paints, and I like to do oil paints like masters like Joshua Reynolds. dunno why.... but all painterly
I don't want to post that one, because I didn't draw it, all I did was colour it in, very quickly. And I don't consider that *my* work Maybe I'll bung some of my next projects into scraps though, but they are just product illustrations.

You mean u didn't draw this! I am sure if u drew it and paint it in paint shop pro it would be fantabulous......

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Alene In reply to Shirleys-Art-Site [2006-01-05 06:19:06 +0000 UTC]

No, I drew it first. We had to hand in an inked drawing of the photograph that we rendered as well- we were allowed to trace it, but in my opinion that is just *cheating* So I drew it, using a grid. Then I painted it in Photoshop CS, using the original photograph as a reference, just as I do with my pencil drawings.

Beautiful! This picture is so graceful and elegant, all of the detail supports that. Lauren came out very lovely, you captures the expression and pose well. I love how you did her hair, the texture is fantastic as are the multi-dimmensional highlights. Her dress looks beautiful, the shadows are just right. I love all of the little details of the piece, such as the pearls that she's holding and the texture on the pillows. A stunning piece!

Wow, this was your first full blown portrait done digitally?! You really have a knack for it!

are you able to do everything you want? i mean, you are an amazing artist and your drawing alway looks unbelievable fantastic and now...digital art. and what should I say? it looks great. i tried just once to do a digital portrait and it looked horrible, but you...okay, i don't want to say again that you are amazing , i think you know...
however, this looks amazing. I want to see more..

Alene In reply to Nearia [2005-09-15 13:00:16 +0000 UTC]

The trick is having a graphics tablet. I'd probably have died if I had to do this with a mouse! And NO! I can't do everything I want- I'm hopeless at painting, and allergic to oil paint, for one thing.
I'm so glad you like it! I'll see if I can get some more done at some points. They take longer than pencil works, unfortunately, and I can't carry the computer around with me, like I do with sketchbooks.

Not quite- but my first digital portrait. I've done the general paint-bucket things, and photo retouching, and my last assignment was a scull, but this is the first time I've used a photograph as a reference to create a portrait.
I'm so glad you like it! Thanks ever so for the too!

In the uni version, she also has a bracelet, made out of my name, warped to fit her wrist (we had to incorperate our name into the design) but I left that out of this one.

Awesome subject (you knew I'd say that ) and a wonderful first attempt. Awesome to see what you can do in other media, too. If you haven't already, you may want to try digital painting with Painter. I've found it to be more intuitive and inspiring than PS for someone who comes from a background of traditional media. One neat thing about digital painting, btw, is that you can apply photo editing techniques to the base work to easily tweak levels/curves, contrast, color, etc.

Alene In reply to SixStringer [2005-09-15 11:53:22 +0000 UTC]

I love to draw Lauren Bacall!
I don't have painter, unfortunately. I try to get a fairly painterly effect in Photoshop, but I know it isn't the same. A version of painter did come with my tablet, but it doesn't want to work properly. I'm going to have try hard to make it work. Also, we *had* to do this assignment in Photoshop.
That's one of the things I love about digital work- you can fix and alter things so easily, without ruining the rest of your image by mistake, and I admit I made shameless use of the dodge and burn tools on those satin cushions. I don't usually like to use those, but I thought they gave the best effect in the least amount of time.
Glad you like it, thanks for the !
