Denver & Rio Grande Western ML4000CC Diesel-Hydraulic locomotive 4002 is seen at a service stop hitched in front of some EMD "F" locomotives, likely piloting the California Zephyr train over the old Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad's section, circa 1963. The trio of DRGW ML4000CCs were sold to the Southern Pacific Railroad after a few years' use. These 3500 horsepower European monsters were imported to the old Southern Pacific Railroad to haul the heavier freight trains in the early-to-mid 1960s. These locomotives weren't built for the train weights and lengths the western railroads often carried, the scorching hot sunlight out there, going through long multi-mile length tunnels like the Moffat Tunnel, and working for up to 12 to 16 hours at a time at full power. The final members manufactured in 1964 coincided with the Electro Motive Division, General Electric, and the American Locomotive Company making 3000 horsepower Diesels, climaxing in 1966 with 3600 horsepower locomotives. They were retired in 1967 and 1968, with 9010 as the only one that didn't meet the torch. She was a cab simulator until the late 1980s. After 11 years of work from 2008 to 2019, she's living her retirement on a heritage railroad in California. She only has one working engine block however.
