Description My first try at painting a horse in oils. I'm loving how the medium works so far, although I wish I had started bigger. There are still some details that I plan to fix later but for now it's pretty close to being finished.

16"x20", oil on canvas.

Thanks to for the beautiful reference! [link]

Lovely! You've got a real sense of movement - much harder than simply drawing the horse's legs as they appear in a photo of the gallop, for example, and you have captured the shine on a well groomed horse.

Thank you! ^_^ I always try to find action poses with lots of shadows and highlights, it was a really beautiful reference to work with.

akuinnen24 In reply to Emily-theArtist [2011-03-27 19:31:12 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! ^_^ I started with the horse and then did the background, so that's why there are still white spaces around the tail that need to be touched up. XD

Gorgeous! A little bit "blurry" but that's because you haven't finished, but from the thumbnail, he looked real! Love the shine and shadow on his sides and shoulders.
Can't wait to see the final final final piece!!

Thanks! Yeah, I rushed it to enter it into an art exhibit so there's still a lot of work left to do. I've been too busy to get back to it yet, but hopefully I can finish it this summer.

so great! Perfect colour, highlights and brushstrokes!! This is how I aim for my oil horses to turn out, it doesn't happen that way though

Thank you! Although I think your paintings are already perfect.
Trying to get the right color for the hindquarters drove me a little crazy, lol. I rushed it so I could get it into an art exhibition, but I might go back someday and fix some things, like the messy shadow and tail.

Yeah colour mixing is a pain in the backside mostly!

This is awesome and so different from the last time I saw it! You'll have to give me some tips on oil

akuinnen24 In reply to Kreauxm [2010-12-02 16:58:39 +0000 UTC]

Thanks ^_^ Lol, I ended up going with the all-out traditional look. I think the best tip with oil I know is that you can erase anything you don't want with mineral spirits if it's still wet. You just brush some mineral spirits onto the paint you don't want and wipe it off with a cloth. I also add a lot of mineral spirits to thin the paint until it's almost like watercolor at times.
