I've been bumping into this more an more so I decided to share my RAEG.

So there is  this group of people on dA who take some already existing art and cut out the backgrounds. That's all. They find some artwork, usually anime fanart, cut the background out, add their own watermark and BAM post it to their galleries  as a free to use stocks without the permission of the original authors.
What's most infuriating there is almost always a disclaimer such as this one :

Oi, dumbfucks! Yes I'm talking to you. Why should anyone credit you for something that you did not create. You've contributed nothing. You've cut the background out, something that in most cases, can be done basically automatically by a computer program with a little to no human assistance.

The whole dA's category for stock renders is flooded with this shit --> browse.deviantart.com/resource…

I'm sorry but I was under the impression that a render is a 2d image generated from a 3d model.  That or shading and texturing an image.
I 've never associated the world "render" with papercutting on a  kindergarten level.

I just don't get why people do it. It's not creative, no new artwork is produced in the process. They are just bastardising already existing works.

I know that many people in the situation like this are up in arms against the site admins. This time I do not think admins are to blame. I think it is  a well known fact that to get a stolen art removed from dA for 100% , the original artist has to be the one reporting it. Unfortunately the "render community" is bypassing it simply by editing works of artists outside of dA. Admins have their arms tied when finding the original author is pretty much impossible.

I don't know, it's just pissing me off when I see how fast this cancerous render community is growing. There are so many groups centred around this bullshit, just to name a few:

On a final note I would like to stress that I'm not trying to shit over the photomanipulation community. I myself love  ambitious and elaborate photomanips. Let's remember though that there is a huge difference between a complicated piece that is skilfully blending dozens of proper stock photos into one harmonious artwork  and cutting a background out of a drawing without the permission of the original creator.

What do you think? Have you also noticed it?  Is it acceptable ? If not who should take care of it? Admins or maybe the general dA community should be less accepting?  Can anything be done? Maybe it's just a natural by-product  of a developing community? I'm just wondering what do you think.

PS. Just as a reminder :

PPS. people using renders for manipulation without the consideration for the original artists are just as bad *coughpokeballscough*

What do I do when I found a fanart of mine that this was done to? Don't wanna be calling names already, but I gave them a warning two days ago, they didn't reakt, so I want to try and get rid of that "render". I am not sure how though...
Can anyone help? Or does anyone know where I can find help?

I don't wanna start adding stupid watermarks......

I still don't get it. Is it just a traced vector image? Then damn that's pretty impressive even for being traced because vector is hard af. Although they should be asking permission...

I think what most annoys me about renders is when the person puts the artist's name in the description but then says "if used, credit me." No, I will not credit you. I will credit the original artist. All you did was do something basically anyone could do with a little bit of sense and a computer/tablet/phone.

It bothers me when they have no credit in the description from the original artist they pinched it from, but a giant watermark of their own in case someone tries to steal it from them

Welp, I think rendering is ok IF you ask the original creator and credit them correctly somehow like this:

Original art by xyz
Rendering by me

And maybe add, that when using they should just credit the original owner or something like that...

Whoa.. I feel kind of stupid. I actually had to look up what rendering meant cause I saw a cute picture with two anime characters I like. Then I saw in the description it read "I did not draws these".

I was scrolling through DA today and saw a render of a Hatsune Miku drawing.  I clicked on it and looked in the description to see if the original image was linked... Nope.  Couldn't they at least have the decency to do that...? XD

Renders, adaptions, re-colors have been a thorn in DA's side for *years*

If you don't like Renders, then you won't like "Recolors". They're worse! Recolorers take a screen shot from a tv show or a movie and use MS Paint to trace and color it like as if it was a coloring page and then claim it as theirs!

I cringe every time I see one! Not only that, I have to get into the habit of video-taping myself so that I have proof that my fan-art I like to draw is straight from scratch and from my own imagination because I like to draw the character close to what she looks like on the show. It's not fair, it's not art and it's not right!

I am dealing with a render right now-____- god i hate them their like "Adaptions" people, god make it stop i think it needs to be stopped, DA should be able to do something abut this, just because they edit it elsewhere, don't mean we can't do anything abut it i am sure there are possibilities. It makes me sick and really angry, maybe maybe not be done but the truth is....

It's just a fancier way of stealing art just like adaptions unfortunately.

morikun-rinari [2013-11-08 23:35:35 +0000 UTC]

Over the years I'll occasionally witness a stupidly large influx of new [obviously stolen] artwork whenever a new video game, anime, etc. come out. It's especially common with franchises such as Final Fantasy, any anime, and so on... Once there's a new fan base for something, someone creates a render off the original artwork and that increases the workload on the dA moderators who have to look into the reports once someone notices it. What's more stressful and annoying is many of these so called artists refuse to put down their works in which they never obtained permission to edit the work of the original artists. They simply don't know when to stop and don't care about copyright laws.

Also, some of these people who edit without permission don't realize that claiming to have some form of ownership (ie. "don't steal, copy...") isn't different from stealing the artist's work.

Back in PS7 days, we had to do renders with the pen tool, so it actually did merit some credit since it was tedious to do and these renders were usually requested by forum signature designers.

Side question, but what's a vector? I don't seem to be getting a proper answer. X3
I find vectors themselves attractive as they usually look professional and clean cut. But, bottom line is it doesn't belong to you just because you do a cookie cut out.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sefice In reply to Avarifina [2012-08-26 15:22:08 +0000 UTC]

This is a very loose description but I'll do my best.

In certain 2d packages a vector is an image with its color and shape information being calculated so that when you resize it there will be no 'pixelization' around the borders like a raster image does. When you create text in Photoshop, it is actually a vector image and if you've noticed before, vectors are somewhat limited when it comes to gradients, blending and filters. That's why there is a need to 'rasterize' once the final look is achieved.

A raster image uses dots or pixels to define an image where as a vector uses 'paths' or 'strokes.'

Usually, company logos are vectors as a convenience for print in billboards, boxes, bottles, etc.

It's like the pr0n Balrog in the Moria mines of dA. It's hard to have an evolving community of artists without draconian rules AND without people who will take blatant advantage. Not saying that dA has good rules or anything, but I don't think more rules are the answer, either.

I read this, only because I saw the word "Render", and then I realized it wasn't what I thought you meant. Being a fractal artist, I thought you meant fractal renders, or even 3D renders, I hadn't thought of this. But yeah, I get what you mean.

Just found this [link] , so sad... I hate renders, and people who do that.
this site is in french. if you use google chrome it will translate the site.

Though I don't render, I personally DO ask and credit others because its the right thing to do. I love the saturday night live gif you have, sums up so many feelings.

Well, not everyone can make a clean cut for things link signatures and such. However, I don't believe in crediting people with something they didn't personally create, just cut out, so I only tell people where I got it if they ask me.

It's like people who make AMVs crediting websites for ripping cutscenes from videogames and such. Again like myself.

Ugh....I hate it when those people lump themselves in with photomanipulators. I'm sorry, but I don't steal. I use stock image only, and even then I read the rules.

To be quite honest "Renders" do not fall in the category "art"..like...at all .More like in "editing". Renders ( mostly anime ) are used in AMV's for example ( Animated Music Videos ) - The credit usually refers to that. Like,i make an AMV,use a render and post it on youtube - in the description i need to credit i guess? For the render i used.

That's how most people use renders at least xD Or for Backgrounds and stuff like that - At least as far as i know.

Buut this is just my outlook on them xD or what iv'e gathered from being in the amv community

Ehh.. doesn't the word rendering apply to 3D work? Or putting in life-like textures in a 2D piece? But cutting out the background, *seriously?*
