Description This is a different monster from what I usually do. Returning to the whole Natural Guardian things, like the Garudas, it follows a similar path.
Not getting ahead...

It started a few days ago when I watched River Monsters and saw Jeremy Wade catch a Barramundi fish in Australia while trying to catch a ultra rare Glyphus Shark. I have no interest in the shark, though. I had interest in the Barramundi.
It was a Lost Reel episode and apparently the Barramundi changes from male to female with age. This, combined that it was a big top predator of the freshwater ways of Australia, it begged for my attention. I am the Mother Fucking Fish Guy, after all.

But I couldn't have just one Australian Kaiju. Time for bouncing ideas! Luckily Raven was online and we bounced. He suggested a good amount of prehistoric animals from the ancient past. Mostly giant Goose relatives. While that was a neat, NEAT idea, I already have a Australian bird kaiju that appeared in the LOST storyline as the "Blunder Birds" which got no profile of their own.
Thinking around again, I came to a few other ideas. One was the infamous fish the Murray Cod. What a beast of a fish. The attitude and parental skills of a Cichlid put into the body of a bass-like fish. Two fish for the price of one!
But there was more.
For a big, badass predator, there needs to be a big, badass prey item. The Murray Crayfish... What a beast of an invertebrate. Take a crayfish, put spines on its segments, make it a fortress.. and you got the might Murray Crayfish. Again this was another good idea.

But I still kept searching for a bit more.

Then I came across the Marsupial Lion. Famous super predator of Australia, outside Megalania of course. But studying this one I noticed something very unique about the bones.
[link] look at the skeleton. Its almost like that of an ape. Hunched over... and it is believed to live in the trees, as well. Very weird... You got this Marsupial... Relative of Kangaroos and Wombats, and in itself almost a giant rodent-like creature. And its named the "Lion" of Australia... But its a tree climber.
And atop that skeleton....

YES! I must do this!
I made this creature above. An ape-like marsupial Kaiju that is a mutation from an ancient Marsupial Lion. Very Ape Like.

I TAKE IT A STEP FURTHER!
It also started the Yowie myth. The Yowie is an almost ape-like creature that appeared in Australia, right? Right!

A few more ideas from Raven suggested making a cult of humans around this monster. Taking off from that, I got a perfect setting.
This monster, which I suppose will be the Yowie just for the fact I know no Yowie Kaiju, is a Guardian of mankind. Long ago it protected the Australian Aborigines from dangers such as predators... and a dreadful, still existing of Bullant Kaiju. Still batting that idea, however...
Now the people themselves do it in secret. There everyday people who have normal jobs... and at some specific date they gather in an underground Oasis where this creature sits and rests, waiting to protect again.

I got the idea to make him a Guardian from Primal Rage. Blizzard, specifically. A good beast. Wanted to homage that.

So we came from fish, all the way to a Ape-Like Marsupial Lion. Yes... Plus a few others yet to refine revolving around the fish.

I'm open to some ideas.

Maybe his rival could be a Megalania kaiju instead, to symbolize how the two species competed for food.

Thanks for considering it, man! Quick question: are you ever going to do another horror fiction piece?

Oh that. Maybe. I was inspired by my friend, TyrantisTerror. He does more horror things than I do, so if your interested in hearing more horror pieces, go to him.

Good idea on mixing the Yowie myths with a real-world analogue like Thylacoleo. However, to match the Yowie reports accurately, this monster may need to have some form of protruding teeth in his lower jaw...unless that whispy thing I see is a tooth, but I honestly can't tell for sure. *SirKaiju seems to be onto something with the mandrill skull idea, so I'm backing that.

but the skull is something I must do.

The fangs are what makes a yowie, well...a yowie. They're practically the only thing distinguishing them from sasquatches anatomically.

Gilarah93 In reply to AkityMH [2012-05-28 13:09:41 +0000 UTC]

Not really. Many primates have short, rounded heads that vaguely resemble a feline's at a glance. Granted, no ape has such a head shape, but you get the idea.

Making a Yowei out of a Marsupial Lion is pretty innovative I dare say, If I had any critiques I would make this critter's head a bit more ape like, the Yowie has a rather distinct head from the "monster" book I have, like a Mandrils almost. So, it being a Kaiju, I imagine it could have some more of a Baboon/Madrill jaw structure incorporated into into it, not too much, but a right mixture of cat and ape features would do nicely for the head, as right now it just looks like a cats head on a apes body. But that's just *my* opinion on it.

AkityMH In reply to SirKaijuOfVaudeville [2012-05-26 07:54:09 +0000 UTC]

Hm... well I figured someone would say that. My first reaction would have been "It would look too ape-like and we got enough giant apes as it is".
But if were going Baboon route, that might hit the nail on the head.

Does the head really look THAT cat-like? I thought it looked a little rattish myself.

SirKaijuOfVaudeville In reply to AkityMH [2012-05-26 07:57:50 +0000 UTC]

It looks odd to say the least, but it certainly isn't the head to go for a "Yowie" Kaiju, maybe another sort of Humanoid Cat from like South America (Jaguaro from Scooby Doo comes to mind)or somewhere, but not a Yowie. At least in my mind, anyways.
