Fanart of Ash, Misty, Caterpie, and Pikachu, inspired by the Pokemon anime's premiere episodes. (Namely based on Episode 003: "Ash Catches a Pokemon!" Ash's first Pokemon capture is his green caterpillar from the Viridian Forest, Caterpie, who's quite smitten with Misty…much to bug-phobic girl's dismay. Hehe).No matter how many years it's been, and no matter how many more seasons Pokemon lasts, I'll always cherish the anime's first three episodes. Ash and Misty made quite a pair back then; them constantly arguing, Ash barely getting his bearings of life on the road, Misty being petrified of bugs…ah, those were the days! Nostalgia, anyone?
Art-wise, I tried methods with this artwork that are different from my previous illustrations. This image was stylized to be comical, cartoony, and cutesy, influenced by anime/manga "chibi" renderings (purposefully disproportionate/sloppy body parts, large heads/eyes, sweatdropping, etc. for example). Also, I fiddled with this pic's perspective, detailing the foreground while blurring the background. Otherwise, I used the same methods here as I've done with most of my other works: first sketched on paper, scanned/digitally re-sketched, Photoshop airbrushing/layer effects, and color blending in Corel Painter.
Pokemon is © Nintendo, not me. Otherwise, the anime's current episodes would still have good old Ash/Misty moments like the glory days.

I feel sorry for Caterpie, but I also understand Misty. None of these two were at fault (only Ash was an insensitive boor, intentionally using a bug to scare a girl - how immature)... Caterpie fallen in love with Misty, but she was afraid of him - such is life. It's happening not only between human and bug, but even between two humans as well...
Have you ever been stalked by someone? Or stalking someone?
I've experienced both. Once I chased a man who rejected me, and the more I was trying to get his attention, the more he grew afraid and irritated. So I let him be, before he might start to hate me...
Soon after, another man grew obsessed about me and stalked me for a short time (until I explained him he's hurting me doing this).
This time I understood how that first man must have feel because of me...
So now I can understand Misty's fear.
Friendship, and especially love, are very serious matters, dealing with these you must be extremely careful.
For the first, the person who you fallen in love with has no obligation to love you back.
For the second, if you love someone, you should not bother nor upset them.
For the third, the more you chase someone, the more they run away from you.
For the fourth: if you really love someone, you choose their happiness over your own (even if it means that you are going to depart with a broken heart).
I think that Caterpie learnt that bitter lesson at the moment he decided to stop stalk Misty and get back into Pokeball. That was very mature and cool of him, Caterpie proved that he really cared for Misty's feelings over his own's, and respected her orders more than his own trainer's.
PS. I think that Caterpie might win Misty's friendship without much trouble if only he wasn't so persistent... I was able to regain someone's trust only when I let him be and waited patiently...

Yeah, I don't feel bad for Misty even if it's all in good fun. He wants to be friends and her fear of bugs doesn't want that to happen to the point of hurting his feelings.

Do you prefer the original, ORIGNIAL anime? The Japanese one? Because to me, I love the English version. It's the one I watched as a kid, at least some of the episodes.
And I'm having a lot of fun watching the episodes! They're great XDXD

I grew up with the 4Kid's English dub, too (and was quite sad when Pokemon Co. USA gave the show a new voice cast. I prefer the first cast. It had a buch of great voice actors in it!). But over the years I've watched downloads of the Japanese cast, too, which is very good. Rika Matsumoto (Ash/Satoshi) is such a great actress and singer! It is a shame that the Japanese dub was never released on bilingual DVDs alongside the English dubs (like most other animes are released nowadays).
You could say that I like both "original" versions of the Pokemon anime: the original English dub, and the original Japanese dub. But having grown up with the English dub, the original 4Kids version will always have a special place in my heart.

Yes, that's the same way with me for Sailor Moon. I grew up with the "original" English dub, and fell in love with it. In all honesty, I really like English dubs better than Japanese anime. It just makes it easier to watch. Though, I do like Japanese anime. The only thing I really love about Japanese anime is that they don't edit so much. It's meant for "older" people. But both Sailor Moon and Pokemon English dubs will always be special to me, too
(But I do prefer the dubs, anyway...)

Indeed. I know there is a special Pokeball designed to catch both Bug Types and Water Types (the "Net Ball"). But it would prove very interesting if Misty came across a Bug/Water Type.

For me I don't mind the newer episodes. I like them all. I love the Kanto ones though. It brings me back to when I was like 3 and they used to show the onl reruns of them. I wasn't born in the time it came out but they are special to me.
