well, this one in particular (if i remenber well) i did it on SAI,
first, i painted the background with the main color, then, i used a blackspray brush with like, 50% opasity and used it on the corners gradually using it less and less while getting close to the character, all of this obiusly on a layer under the character :3 hope that helped ^w^ if you have any other questions just ask :3
