Here is my entry for 's contest!
This contest is held in co-operation with #Equine-Resource . They held the first part of the contest and chose four stock pictures. Now the idea is that #Unicorn-Club 's members create an unicorn based on one of these chosen stocks.

The title ruska is a Finnish word and means roughly translated 'autumn colors'.

Itsekin olen räiskyvien värien ystävä, mutta veikkaan, että tämä pläjäys oli joillekin liikaa. Ainakin voittajat oli sellaisia perinteisiä valkoisia yksisarvisia. Kauniita toki nekin!

I like it, seriously it looks cool. The spiral horn is a nice touch. The splattered background goes along with the critter so well.

I'm curious as to how you did all those flecks of paint without getting it all over the main character, whether you did the background first or not... :/

I painted the background first but I covered the character with masking fluid before painting. Then I just removed mask and colored character. That stuff is very handy!

Ah, I thought you might've used masking fluid, but I wasn't sure, so I thought it better to ask than to assume XD
It is very handy indeed ^^ Although I don't use watercolour much. I'm more of a graphite person XD

Indeed! People have sometimes so weird and interesting techniques so you can never be sure what they have used. My solution here was ordinary on boring tho.

I haven't been using watercolors for long but I would really love to learn to use them better. ^^

Graphite is also something I would love to learn but I really need colors at the moment (dark autumn...) so they have to wait for a while.

Well...although masking fluid is a basic material...you'd be surprised at what can be done with it!

Yeah, I am just finding how handy it actually is... I have had the bottle of it very long time but I found it difficult to use. Now I have figured out better how it works.

I went a bit crazy with colors when I drew and painted this but so far no-one has complained getting blind because of these colors - so I am happy to hear that you like them too!

Yeah, it is good to see something surprising in unicorns' designs now and then. Traditional white ones can be noble and elegant but seeing too much of them may get boring.

This is really wonderful! I love the way it's mane floats so lightly. The whole mood of the painting is light and careless, the spots are a wonderful touch, very unique. I like it.^^
The background is simply amazing. I just love the colors you chose for this piece, so bright and careless.

I painted the background first and then I had to somehow figure out colors for the unicorn so that it wouldn't dissappear in that color explosion. I didn't want to do traditional white one but create my own, autumnal version.

I love autumn too, it is my favorite season.

Although I have had to question this preference recently when I has done nothing but rained all days long... but luckily finally today is the most beautiful autumn weather!

Well of course rain is better when you are inside.
Wet and cold is kinda romantic in my book, gives a feel of deathly hollows. Too bad we don't have mist here.

That's not obvious - my boyfriend actually likes walking in the rain! Too bad for him but we have been together so long that I am not sharing this passion of his anymore just to please him.

Oo, mist is gorgeous! And I never have a camera around when it rises.

I used to like walking on rain until I got soaked couple of times and caught some really bad colds(in summer especially). hum...cough, I'm not much of an relationship expert but seems like a good thing to do. XD Why should you do what he wants all your life just to please him.

Yeah, doing some stuff just to please others is great thing to do now and then but you can't lost yourself while doing that.

You really are having fun with your watercolours at the moment, huh? I love these colours; due to the pencils you're using, I guess. They're vibrant colours, but not in an -omg-burn-my-retinas-out way..

I have already planned new techniques I'd like to test in backgrounds; now I just have to find some time to execute them.

I am happy to hear that you like my color choices! The background actually looked horrible after I had painted base colors but then I added those splatters to make it a bit darker. It is busier now but colors are better - and it hopefully do not burn anyone's retinas.

You guessed right, I used toothbrush for spots. This time I covered the character with masking fluid before painting the background - I am getting used to that smelly stuff little by little!
