There were a lot of animals with young, and we are in the grips of the worst drought in 30 years, so the animals are all near major rivers and waterholes, making spotting things easier.
The Kruger Park is largely a 'drive yourself' place, although you can do paid game drives but they are really expensive - they cater for tourists from Europe and the US, and are essentially priced in dollars (at a 15.50 exchange rate!)
Once you get the hang of it, it is much nice to drive around yourself, particularly if, like us, you don't like crowds. Crowds and noise also freak out the animals - this mother was pretty twitchy, because at this age, her child would be very vulnerable to many predators. We often stop, and swtich off the engine, and just listen, and are amazed at what was already there, that one hadn't seen at first glance.
