Affet-kak In reply to UnReaL4 [2010-08-06 10:52:59 +0000 UTC]

ha ha this was so long ago im not sure i can remember!
i have improved since this image, so ill give some advice from my current knowledge. the vray sun is very good to use, but if you are going to use it, you make have to resort to a vray camera (with expose control) or turn down intensity
i usually down the intensity to about 0.003 for an exterior render, or to 0.04 for interior renders

then in vray environment settings (in render panel) put a nice blue in the colour slot, dont bother with vray sky if you have turned down intensity
for my GI i use irrandiance map for primary bounces and quasi monte carlo (or brute force) in secondary

there is no one lighting setting that can be used for every scene, you have to keep fiddling until you get it right for that scene

hope that helps a bit

Wow. I really like the lighting here. I like the softness on the wall and in the reflection of the ball. You did a really nice job. The reflections on the frames are a touch as well.

cheers
took me so long to get the lighting to semi work!
ive been thinking of revisiting this one, its probably a bit too dark in places

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ZeroStrike In reply to Affet-kak [2010-07-21 23:23:04 +0000 UTC]

True I think that the center frame is alittle dark. But overall I like the contrast of darker and lighter parts. Lighting is definitely one part I really need to work on.

i still dont think ive fully got it yet

Well I think you have a pretty good concept so far. Just keep tweaking it and I'm sure you'll find something you are happy with.

Nolan-Brunsdon [2010-01-22 10:33:08 +0000 UTC]

lightning a bit dark (hint: don't use push button render technique)
paintings are dark and blurry
the wood on the paintings are reflecting as much as the glass
floor needs wood texture it looks plastic
there are some weird spots on the walls

just some constructive crit

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Affet-kak In reply to Nolan-Brunsdon [2010-01-22 22:04:32 +0000 UTC]

whats push button technique? ive never seen or heard about that

yeah im planning on retaking photos of the pictures (at the time i had no camera, so i had to use my laptop webcam lol)

where are the wood frames reflecting?

the floor is actually cork tiles which are varnished, if you compare it to a photo (im thinking of uploading it soon) its is almost exactly the same

and as for the weird spots, i need to up the render settings to remove the noise, not looking forward to that i used moderate settings and this took 6 hours, high settings will likely take a few days

Nolan-Brunsdon In reply to Affet-kak [2010-01-25 05:29:18 +0000 UTC]

the frame on the far side wall is reflecting

whats push button technique?....dont just render with default settings on vray or mental ray, you need to play with some illumination settings and push it right up

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Affet-kak In reply to Nolan-Brunsdon [2010-01-25 21:54:23 +0000 UTC]

oh trust me i have fiddled SHIT LOADS
you couldnt see anything originally, it took me days of work just on the lighting to get this far

and the piture frame is actually a thin metal bar around it. the dark area is part of the picture (covered with glass)

Lighting looks great. Maybe a little more noise on the sphere to match the background? And soften the shadow ever so slightly more.

Affet-kak In reply to ArchDragon [2010-01-19 23:45:25 +0000 UTC]

yeah i didnt have the render settings very high with this
i should rerender it some time

cool. looks pretty good! what kind of lighting setup did u use?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Affet-kak In reply to ShengDaFlashPRo [2009-11-02 09:34:59 +0000 UTC]

im using vray, and usind its global illumination system, and a vray sun.

vray basically makes everything look good once u learn a bit about it.

but it did take me a while to get the lighting right coz it can stuff up

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ShengDaFlashPRo In reply to Affet-kak [2009-11-02 11:08:02 +0000 UTC]

i use maya. so Vray isn't really supported all too well i'll stick with mental ray. though both are damn similar

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Affet-kak In reply to ShengDaFlashPRo [2009-11-02 11:21:48 +0000 UTC]

yeah i suppose, mental ray is just fiddly to set up, vray is push a button and u get a photreal cube (almost) but it still has all the customisation.

but vray would mean relearning, so if u can use mental well stick with it! im just lazy!

ShengDaFlashPRo In reply to Affet-kak [2009-11-02 12:15:30 +0000 UTC]

i've tried vray a few times... it was awesome. but i used it in 3ds max, and i epically fail at 3ds max D: i like vray.. but shame 3ds max is a fag to me >:[

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Affet-kak In reply to ShengDaFlashPRo [2009-11-02 22:05:38 +0000 UTC]

rly? i hate maya, it has all these 'smart tabs' its kinda like the new microsoft word i hate that i prefer 2003 word.
bit off topic lol

max just has it all summed up in a modifier list.

but, there is a new version of vray that i have heard of that is compatible with maya (or so i hear)
