Out of curiosity, what tool do you use to assemble the frames into an animated gif?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Aexion In reply to bib993 [2012-03-10 17:41:14 +0000 UTC]

I use VirtualDub for assembling the frames and Infarview for lowering the color depth.
I already wrote a journal about the whole process, here is the link:
[link]
Also, try APNG, since it allows you to use the full color range!(its on the journal too!)
BTW, incredible animation!!

VirtualDub? I use it to save as AVI, where is the command to save as gif?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Aexion In reply to bib993 [2012-03-10 17:52:57 +0000 UTC]

It's on the export section, in the file tab. (File/Export/Animated Gif)

Mmmh, and now how to export with the original color palette? It seems it exports only with 256 colors...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Aexion In reply to bib993 [2012-03-10 19:55:09 +0000 UTC]

For more than 256 colors, only APNG! Gif uses only 256 colors and you have to lower the color depth of the frames (use IrfanView with Floyd Steinberg dithering enabled before building the animation!).
APNG is not restricted to that, since it is PNG, but few browsers can handle it (Firefox, Opera and Chrome, as far as I know).
I use both for my animations.. here are two examples of how they end:
Gif Animated (Floyd Steinberg),
[link]

APNG, full color, but only few browsers:
[link]

APNG is not handled by VirtualDub, so I have used APNG anime maker: [link]

Hope that helps!

Yes, that definitely help! So, I have decreased color depth on all frames like you said in Irfanview (Floyd Steinberg) and saved them as jpg. The frames look still very good. But when saving the animated gif with Virtualdub, I still see some horrible color bands. What did I do wrong?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Aexion In reply to bib993 [2012-03-10 21:07:45 +0000 UTC]

First of all: JPG is evil!!
Use IrfanView batch processing and save the frames as 256 colors BMP.
In that way VirtualDub will not interpolate the colors (that's the cause of the bands)
Since JPG is 24bit, well, even if it is lowered to 256, the format remains as 24bit and VDub will try to interpolate.. Hence why BMP is the solution..
Just another point: Do not use VDub for scaling, all on IrfanView, since scaling can also kills the dithering.
Try it

That works great! But I have another question before I update my animated gif. How can I change the frame rate in Vdub? It seems that the exported gif does not take into account what I input in the Video/Frame Rate control window. Thanks!

Aexion In reply to bib993 [2012-03-21 09:48:10 +0000 UTC]

No idea, I never have tried that.. I suspect that VDub only uses the default speed . Good Luck

bib993 In reply to Aexion [2012-03-21 09:52:48 +0000 UTC]

OK, but when I look at your animated gifs, they look like 25 fps or more, and vdub default is 10 fps. So you confirm you use vdub to export the gif??

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Aexion In reply to bib993 [2012-03-21 10:03:28 +0000 UTC]

I use VirtualDub v1.9.11
I just import the BMP image sequence, and touch nothing, just the export Gif option.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

bib993 In reply to Aexion [2012-03-21 21:46:18 +0000 UTC]

See [link]
The dithering look good, but not the frame rate. I use the same vdub version as you, and followed all instruction, load the BMPs and directly export as gif, so that's a mystery!
Do you confirm that by default, you are keeping the radio button "No change (current: 10.000 fps)" in the Video/frame rate menu?
