All the little pits and crevices on its hide make it look really ragged. There's a sad look in its eye, too. Quite a venerable looking animal you have here. This looks almost exactly like something you'd expect to find in someone's field journal.

Great looking creature! And that's a good idea, smudging the background haha I find when i scan in ink images, they're crisp and clear but when i scan sketches, i have to adjust the levels and the backgrounds go all craptastic. Best way is to just take the same color swatch background and lay it over the grain and grit or smudge it like you did ^-^

Yeah I thought the smudging would help with the scanning, but no. My scanner just doesn't do pencil well. Luckily all it took to fix was a low-flow soft brush in Photoshop.

I'd have to agree. There's beauty to be found in even the ugliest-looking animals.
