I really wanted to do this meme , saw it as a great opportunity to fight with my artblock a bit. And maybe to give myself some hope by proving there was an improvement? Huh...

The old piece is from the very beginning of 2007. I thought it was quite good back then, silly me.

I wanted to make the new one in the same conditions as the old one. So... The same theme, initial background colour, canvas size, time limit, no references... And, last but not least, the same goal – to make the piece as realistic as I can with my current skills.
And here... I failed.
Because just after I laid down the base colours, I thought "It looks quite nice now… Okay, screw realism, I have plot it will be painterly". So while the first one is supposedly realistic (haha...), the second doesn't even try.
And I still think it's nice. The style shift allowed me to complete the painting in about half of the given time (3 hours, maybe?). I don't know what to think of it. On the one hand, I can now paint a face faster, but on the other... it still takes me a horrendous amount of time to paint something more than a speedpaint...

What improved (I hope):
- COLOURS
- anatomy
- shading, especially on skin and hair (I don't try to paint each strand separately anymore)

What hasn't changed:
- I really like painting female portraits
- she still doesn't look Asian
