Yeah, I don't think Google translate does the job perfectly, sometimes you get rather amusing translations, and you've got to maybe experiment a bit. I find it helps me to get the gist of where others are coming from.
As to what you expect from an engineer, a person's training doesn't define the limits of who they are, it just communicates that they are likely to hold certain skill sets and have been exposed to common theories of how to apply them. It doesn't tell you about their wider skill sets or their ability to build on the common or even oppose it, to come up with new approaches.
