That's what Giygas transformed into. He used to be called Giegue, but his name changed when his immense power destroyed his body and mind, reducing his to a sentient spectral hurricane of pure evil.

In mother 1 to beat him, you need to sing Marias song. He will gain his feelings for her back, and this eats him up mentally. He later erased his memory of her. To become stronger he absorbed many minds of people. This made him so evil, that it shattered his body, leaving his corrupted mind behind. At this point he was more than just Giygas, his mind was molten together with the minds he absorbed. To stabilize his "mind", he was put in the devil's machine.
After Porky deactivates the devil's machine at the end of Earthbound, all hell breaks loose, since he is no longer in control.Β
His corrupted mind consumes the kids, putting them into his "soul".
Oh yeah did i mentioned mind once?

After you beat him in Mother 1, Giygas continues conquering other worlds and growing in power, but eventually his body can't contain his power anymore. This causes his body and mind to disintegrate, transforming him into the pure form of chaos we all know and love.

The head is too round and his ears are too wide. If not that, he looks very similar.

Nicely done...not everyone who's played Earthbound is aware of his origin--what he used to look like, or what lay at the core of his weaknesses (why pure emotion from prayer could damage him when he'd become evil incarnate). In this pic, you've done a fine job of revealing what Giygas used to be, along with subtle foreshadowing to what he would eventually become (seen in the scarlet-glowing eyes and the distinct appearance of his "containment bubble."
I also like how you put a noticeable effort into fleshing out the nigh-nondescript sprite of Giygas from the NES game--not only does Giygas' appearance here resemble the sprite, but it seems to be what said sprite would likely have BEEN, had the developers had access to SNES-and-beyond-level technology when they made this game. Moreover, you add a sinister and otherworldly air to Giygas appearance--a refreshing change of pace from a lot of the gender-bent and bishounen versions of the Universal Cosmic Destroyer that I've seen while cruising deviantART.
Finally, the level of detail in this pic if jaw-dropping--from the "brush-strokes" that add depth to the containment sphere and machinery, to the subtle shading that casts Giygas in an eerie light, I'd have plenty of reason to fave this pic even if I -wasn't- an Earthbound fan. Kudos, dude. This pic deserves it.
