AdamsWife — Xanthorrhoea in the fog.

Description It pleases me no end to see that some farmers leave these beautiful grass trees standing. They grow so slowly that these have probably taken a couple of hundred years to get to this size and yet on new housing developments, they knock them down as though they were weeds.

Cool! very powerful contrast with red and white. And I know how slow those things grow too, it's good that they leave them where they are, and I think most ones available in garden nurseries are rescued plants from developed areas anyway

Councils around NSW are now saving these wonderful plants. Great shot, well done.

Thank you. I wish they would do the same here. I was furious when Shire workers knocked over a huge one outside my house as they widened the road. There was no excuse for it at all, except carelessness.

There is no need to destroy things just because they may not please everyone. Some of the pretty things are quite disastrous.

You're welcome
Unusual type of tree compared to where I live (flower spikes growing on top). I suppose thats to do with the much different climate though.

Yes they are very different to anything I ever saw before coming to Australia.

I like the symmetry. And the fine mist gives the secene a nice soft feel.

We also have some species that are protected, of very slow grow... but they are so good to light a fire, that most people that live outside the cities cut them anyway...
These are magnificent and so strange looking!!

I am so behind with my thanks and comments M, but I'm here at last to thank you for your comment. We have people who raid the bush for dead trees and logs for burning, which are more than likely home to all sorts of little creatures.

A couple hundred years? Thats surprising. They definitely should be looked after and respected.
What are those things called that are growing out of the top?
Great photo Eve!

Thank you Joe for your very thoughtful comment and I agree.

The things sticking out the top are last years flowers spike. Mostly they are straight up and down, but occasionally you get the odd shaped spike [link]

Great atmosphere and colours!!! These trees sure look very special, never seen them before (not even on a photo).
It's such a pitty that they don't let them stay there!! I hate people doing this!!
Are the stick-looking things in the trees branches?

Thank you Rettie for this thoughtful comment.
The stick looking things are what are left of last years flower spike. The majority of flower spikes are straight up and down, but I have a photo here [link] that is a very odd shape. It will give you some idea of the flower.

I've been captivated by it from the start. We have had few Autumn ad Winter Orchids flowering, but the main season hasn't started yet.

I don't know because we can only buy them in our shops.

September & October is the main orchid season here. You are lucky to find any nature photographers at home during that time
