Yeah, it's /very/ possible they had some connections with each other. My headcanon was that they were close friends, but they might've even liked each other just a little.

My theory is that Smile was trying to be close to Sabitsuki and invited her to his house to do stuff with her and many thing. They might have been friends, or even best friends. Then SAbitsuki was scared that they were too close and physically attacked him and his sister...
