I'm there with ya! Pastels get way to messy and I usually am pretty afraid of them for detailed work - they are pretty good for pine tress though.
I once got this crazy notion to do an actual portrait with pastels!!! Bad idea, but it turned out incredibly good... Still very bad idea though - soooo hard to get details [link]

Soooo messy and hard to control. (Unless doing pine trees or sunsets)
The portrait turned out great! You're pretty good with pastels, too, though I'm sure you don't want to hear it-it might force you to do more with pastels. lol. =]

Yeah, I have feared pastels ever since then but they are nice for landscapes on occasion as you said. I do like watercolors and colored pencils both but my safe zone is graphite or lead. A regular old pencil that can be erased easier then the colored ones and I don't have to worry about painting ovr with light watercolors...

Graphite is amazing...especially for portraits, simple animals, and trees. =]
I really like colored pencils, though. I really get happy with my black and white for the highlights and shadows.
I don't really care much for watercolor. I would rather have regular paint, and I'm terrible with that. I just can make a brush do the same things I can make a pencil do. There's a few other pencil artists at my school that can't paint for the life of them, either, so it makes me feel better.
Ever try charcoal? I like it, even though it's really messy, but at least it's eraseable, unlike pastels.

I have done it a couple times! I consider charcoal and pastel's to be honestly the same - both seem just as erasable as each other and I often combine to two - using charcoal for shadowing and such.

Sei loves the moon very much! Its catchy and provides a nice sense of lightness, its quite natural looking. The trees and snow are also lovely, its melancholic. No other word to describe the experience! Good work!
