Description
I decided to darken the back ground of my first picture of Pirate. I usually leave the background white but, I just had this urge to darken the back ground. It's been bothering me since Dec. Anyway I did it and I think it looks okay. What do you think?Related content

I think the dark background adds a great sense of completion to the artwork and it also helps establish a bit of a better mood. I like how you can see the lines in the background; this texture really looks nice.
Also, I hate to sound overly critical or rude, but now that the background is darker, I think the starkness of the shading is a bit more evident. The whiteness of his face appears too white, especially compared to the shadowed areas. I think the moral of the story is to very, very, very slightly darken some of the whiter areas. It should also "bring his eyes out" or whatever. Of course, I'm nowhere nearly as good as you are at drawing (hey, I'm an amateur, I should get better in a few years... hopefully

That is why I don't like shading the back ground on most of my drawings, I can never get it right. I appreciate your comments! They are very helpful!! This is why I like DA because there are artists who can see what needs to be corrected and can give great tips! Thanks!!!

I like it! he looks nice 'n shiny lol teh background does suit a darker feel than usual due to the shading that he has on him. Plu to help show where light is coming from would be aided by a darker background ^^

The white background made him "pop" more, but the darker background is more fitting for the character and the expression.

You could make it darker if you wanted to, but I don't think it needs it. Right now the hair still sets out from the background. I'd keep it like this.
