Description It's because i don't have one of these.

this is a little mock up i did today demonstrating what i'd like to see in a messenger app. pretty much a panel applet.

Disclaimer: the following is a bunch of my opinions and a description of the Functionality i'd like to see in a messages panel app.

here, i'll throw some opinions at ya. a floating window or widget is not practical, although a window is better than a widget it's still too slow. messaging should be an integrated function ever accessible in the form of a notification. it should at any time appear over whatever you're doing in one click or less. you should NEVER need to move a window to access messages.

Functionality? so, default state is just the contact list. i mocked up that as well but got lazy doing the screenshot. once click on a contact will automatically extend the message panel. one click on a contact while a message is currently active in the message panel will add a tab and make it active on the panel. closing all tabs will un-extend the messages panel. it's just that simple. you may notice the redundancy of that first drop menu item. sorry i got lazy. the drop menu quickly serves up options for individual contacts.

the options panel slides down when you click the gear and offers various quick options. you can toggle various accounts on/off and hide or change stuff. THAT IS THE ENTIRE OPTIONS PANEL

the add account button will open a sign in dialog over the message panel. so, in effect you will NEVER leave this one simple panel. it's powerful and stupid simple

btw, scroll bar appears (rendered OVER content) on hover or while using the wheel. scroll bars are over rated.

my compliments to the elementary os crew for inspiration.

If new messages appear at the bottom, maybe text input field should be at the bottom too?

Gnome Shell allows replying from notifications, but for things other than having a conversation started by someone else, you need to open Empathy.

BTW coders get paid, but artists get praise. Coders only get bashed by users if app is buggy. I guess that's how the world works... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Nice. What application are you using for socializing? Curious as I'm using Xfce and it looks like you use GNOME 3?

it's all purely mocked up.

It looked too good to be true. Good job.

I looked at this and thought "you simply don't want to talk to the people who want to talk to you?" and then I read the description and was like "oooh, it's just a mockup". Had me going there for a second, though Linux had changed their messaging app, would've given it another go if they did.

it's no so much about what i don't or do want to do. that implies i have some level of control, which, until very recently i lacked completely.

that's actually pretty cool. if you can set it to show in the tray it'd be great

i didn't tried because it works only in windows. and the writer of the article only maked a design. so, if any one wants make an implementation, it will be better to set it in the tray
I hope that it will not take long time before we found an pokki-like app in linux

looks macish. anyway, you have no idea how incredibly unlikely it is to see anything like this in linux.

its elementary/ice cream sandwich inspired. how do you mean?Ike coding it is not viable, or too complex? I'm not really a programmer

neil78b In reply to Aaron-A-Arts [2012-04-15 05:02:19 +0000 UTC]

elementary/ice cream sandwich is mac inspired, lol, not a bad thing though. The coding and design, especially the curves on the window, also the layout and tabs.

and what is macish? windowsish xD remember when windows ui was basically just a fullscreen explorer with a menu up top? i was like 10 so i barely do. i remember file>exit cd\doom\doom xD but mac totally ripped off windows

What windows were you using, lol?? Links/photo's to what you're talking about. Fullscreen explorer, lol, its still explorer that is the desktop. Seeing as though Mac had the first ever GUI, everything from that point(everything we use today) was a copy. Anyway, nothing wrong with looking macish, its a very well designed system aesthetically and functionally.

it was one you launched from dos c:\windows
it was a full screen file browser as i recall.

need some links/screenies because nothing like that was even used in dos on up. I can remember running files an all but the screen always had a title bar and then a file menu with files and programs. The title bar was at the top and everything contained in it, hence the name Windows. Yup, mac started it all, sad that windows copied it but it had to start some where, lol. Keep bringing those pretty good macish screenies of yours, people like them, as well as I.

lol this was a long time ago. i have a very very fuzzy image in my memory, so i mean, i'm sure i'm mistaken. that's just what i remember seeing. the 95 basic interface is really the first solid memory i have of windows

very nice, why don't you try applying this on elementary OS ideas box as blueprint?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Aaron-A-Arts In reply to Iovaart [2012-04-14 02:59:04 +0000 UTC]

i submitted it to the deviant art gallery, altho i didn't follow elementary design style (just imitated it in ways) so they will probably have to deny it's entry. where do i submit the blueprint thing? can you link me?

just google launchpad elementary OS

Aaron-A-Arts In reply to Iovaart [2012-04-14 03:30:41 +0000 UTC]

i looked at launchpad but i've never used it. is it common practice to submit a mock up and a description? it feels like it's specifically geared towards hardcore developers and not so much designers

well, most people write text, but a mockup is better than walls of text, amirite? :la;
