Aha…ahaha it’s finally FINISHED! and with only two days to go!I have spent the good part of the past two weeks doing this, I have no idea why I put so much time and effort into this but for some reason I just realllly had to do my very best on this. It’s the first time in probably two months or so that I’ve coloured a picture and boy did I feel rusty, it’s probably been even longer that I’ve drawn any full bodies too *sadface*.
But yes if you didn’t know who these ladies are they’re, going clockwise, Ruby, Yang, Weiss and Blake, the stars of the new show RWBY from Roosterteeth who are usually known for RvB. This poster was done for a contest of theirs, to create a movie styled poster for the show.
I did a lot of experimentation on this poster, trying out new ways of doing hair with Weiss and her majestic as all hell self and pretty much a lot of effects, like Wang’s fire puanch, the goddamn magic ring that refused to get into perspective for god knows how long and the snow which was surprisingly simple and now I also know how to make space backgrounds too. I also found out a cool setting for making clouds, it’s a bit rough in the poster but hopefully I’ll be able to refine the technique in the future.
So yeah with all that said, my RWBY Poster Contest Entry everyone!

I feel like Weiss's eyes aren't scrutenizing enough. She always has that bitchy "you're wasting my time" look on her face. You drew her with a kind of stoned look on her face. Other than that, the piece is actually really good. I've been slowly working on my manga skills over the years and I could never dream to draw something like this. So I give you props on this level which you've demonstrated yourself to be on. Just keep in mind the personalities of the characters. Personally, I think Yang is spot on. Again, great job overall, well done.

I have forgotten the exact font name :< but I do know I found it on dafont, I'm sure it'll be easy enough to find, at the very least you can find something very similar to it!

Wow, I was almost convinced that there was a movie coming out when I saw this.
However, the issues I had with this is that Blake's katana looks like a claymore and Weiss's rapier could have used a bit more color around the chamber (or could have been put into perspective since it's one of the highlights of the weapon.)
Also, in my total experience with this kind of art...Yang's fire kind of reminds me of cheese puffs. This is not to poke (although it honestly makes me laugh when I think about it), but to say it from a perspective.
I want to say more, but I'm still new to DeviantArt to say anything else. Yeah, scared cat here.

Yeahhh Blake's weapon, I actually drew it wrong because I was using some strange references that made it look stubbier and shorter than it is. I wanted to do something perspectivey with Weiss' weapon too but I could not for the life of me figure out how to draw it, and with the deadline I wanted to get it done in time.
Also now I can't see the fire as anything but cheesepuffs haha. I'll have to figure how to make it look more fire like in the future!

The only critique worth noting that I can think of is Ruby's Scythe. Simply put, I had to deliberately look to see it. It blends in too well with her cape.

Ahh finally crit. Yeahh I was worried about that too, but at that point I had spent sooo much time on the piece I just let it go. I'll take it into consideration next time, perhaps add more highlights on the weapon to help it stand out a bit more.
Probably would help too if I didn't paint them together at the same time because I'm a lazy arse.

Alright! I'll give this critique all I've got!
Weiss' face looks very flat. Way too flat. I don't know how you could fix that with this types of eyes however.
Her weapon could also have used an effect. Removing the mist and adding one of her weapon glows, or at the very least the colors in her rapier's cylinder.
Yang's face looks boring. Her mouth has no details to it.
Also the whole flame punch thing isn't obvious. What with the ridiculous amount of fire beneath her it's really tough to realize if any of it came from her gauntlet or not. A better one might have been if some of the flames had still been licking the gauntlet; hanging on to it and thus forming a physical bond. Then again, that might be too early in her punch for your drawing.
Most of Yang's hair is great but at the bottom left it looks like two 2D layers. The moment I noticed that her hair lost it's impact.
P.s. Her right shoulder, it looks a bit too much placed to the right doesn't it? Considering where her back seems to actually be anyway.
Blake has an issue where her mouth seems non existent. I have to deliberately look for it to find her mouth and that's just a bit too much. All lips have some color to them and it would not have hurt to have added a little bit here. Or maybe just thicken the coloring and shading a bit.
Gambol Shroud, Blake's weapon, also seems to be a BIT too short but.. honestly? That's nitpicking at best and downright wrong at worst.
Quick note, god dammit those EYES. Really well done.
Two more to go far as I can see. First of all, her hair around her ear. It looks... Weird. Her ear is sticking out yet her hair reforms PERFECTLY as soon as it get below it. It makes it look like she's actually got one hell of a sideburn.
Lastly for Blake is her right arm. Halfway her upper right arm it just... Doesn't it kind of look like her arm bends there? Muscles aren't that pronounced in the upperarm and there's no way it would dip down that much. So her upper arm could've been a bit smoother. Not completely because there IS some drop.
Whew, loads for Blake. Well let's just move on to the main dish! RUBY!
Ruby is, for the most part, very well done.
First complaint I can find is how her right leg is pulled up. Now this wouldn't be a problem BUT, look at her left leg and the shadow her skirt leaves! Now the skirt doesn't seem to bend away any significant amount, so naturally her left leg should be a bit more in the shadow, shouldn't it? since the skirt around the leg would still be pulled forward a bit. A possible explanation for this could be Yang's fire though, which I realized halfway through writing this. Still, I felt it was good food for thought so I kept it in.
Second nitpicking: Her belt doesn't seem to properly loop around her back. It just takes a smidge too long to start to make the bend which gives the viewer one of two impressions: 1, her hips are MASSIVE or 2, the belt isn't bendy at all and is hanging from her hips on that end.
Ruby also seems to suffer from the mouth issue, though less pronounced than with Blake. It's a fun and quirky looks but honestly, you can't just pull your mouth away from underneath your nose which makes it looks unrealistic. If you'd moved it a bit more back it would have been perfect.
Next up her hair. Why is the top of her hair so dark when for the cloak the shadow is on the bottom side? The top side of the cloak, which shares the same type of surface as Ruby's head, is clearly getting light shone upon it yet her hair is shadowed. I think you made a lighting mistake here.
One more issue: Her scythe. No, not the colors, the actual position and size. If you look at where the shaft meets the scythe head it looks like the scythe is angled at something like 30 degrees no? (30 degrees down from aiming straight up, into the direction of aiming straight at the camera) Yet the top bit of the scythe doesn't seem to do the same. It doesn't seem to grow or give a 3d feeling as the tip comes closer to the camera point. Perhaps a bit more emphasis on the 3d structure of the scythe around the following point could have helped: puu.sh/49bQG.png
This is making it look like I spent NO attention on Weiss, jesus. Well, Weiss WAS done amazingly well so yeah...
No seriously. Weiss has so many details to her it's insane.
Now I could harp a little bit more on the poses, such as that Yang REALLY looks like she needed another 3 centimeter on the right just to properly show the flames and thus the impact of her punch but honestly? It's good. It's better than good, it's really really good as it is. All of their poses really show their character attributes. Ruby's athletic fighting style, Blake's... Well, I don't know how exactly this does it but the pose does manage to capture her well, then Yang's power fighting style and lastly Weiss' graceful stances.
Oh and it might have served to have color coded the names of the voice actors on top appropriately to their character color themes.
Final thing I could POSSIBLY harp on is that the moon thing seems to be in front of the rain. Somehow.
I want to bring special attention to how ridiculously good you are at magic circles, drawing special effects (and making them look like they've got loads of volume to them) and lastly to hair shading. These three really stand out above all else.
Now as a closing word: I don't draw. At all. I've seen a LOT of DA art, but I by no means know how something like this gets made. Pick and choose what makes sense, and if I said something stupid, just ignore it.
In the end, all I know is how to nitpick.

Now to tackle this behemoth.
I can see what you mean about a flat face, I'll have to work on the shape of her fact and the shading, help bring out her cheeks a bit more so that they have more definition and give it a more 3D feel.
I was actually also worried about Yang's face, she's the most rambunctious of the lot so I tried to give her face a lot of emotion, sadly her eyes were too huge to elicit much but a sorta blank stare. As for the punch it's actually after the event, the trail of fire being the residual effect, hence why her arm is in a bent position just after landing a punch of fiyah! But I can see why it looks kinda vague, maybe I'll have it during the action so it's clearer. Admittedly Yang was the final of the girls to be finished so I was a tad bit lazy with her hair, added to the fact I really didn't know what to do for her hair at that point. I think to rectify the shoulder problem I should bring her left arm back, I'm looking at it now and whilst her body and arm placement for her right arm are okay it's the fact her left one is too far forward that makes it look awkward...sadly I think I went a bit liefeld on her.
I fear the brush I used may have been to thin for Blake's mouth, as it was anime style I didn't want to put too much detail into them, but in hindsight I think maybe I should have airbrushed some pink in for her lips, or added an underlip detail like I did with Weiss. Yeaahh with Blake's arm I had problems drawing the shape and muscles, so I sorta winged it at that point, I was on a deadline and didn't have enough time to study anatomy so it's a bit rushed, it could do with being more smoother, I think the main problem might be the shading because it makes the drop a bit too pronounced. Oops I missed a bit, yeah her ear sideburn thing was the product of thinking her head doesn't make sense so LET'S PUT HAIR IN THE WAY TO HIDE OUR MISTAKES! As for the blade, I wasn't actually sure how huge it was, I was going through a fair few references and it didn't look that long in some pictures so I just went with a small size.
As for the problems with Ruby I noticed they group into two of my biggest problems, lighting and perspective D; Ruby's scythe was, I dare say BALLS HARD, it has so many parts and details that it was hard to follow with my simple knowledge of perspective. As for the lightin...actually I'm not sure what you mean for the lighting concerning Ruby's hair...if it's not too much trouble could you point that out a bit clearer?
As for the moon, it appears in front of the rain because it's pure white and that's snow XD though the blue part is also part of the moon and is behind the snow so I'm not sure what else i could do there? In the layers it's all behind the snow.

WHAT THE FUCK IS WITH DEVIANTART?! I spent YEARS on this site, never finding anyone with a mature attitude and now in one weeks time I've found THREE!
I dont... I cant... I don't even know anymore.
Anyway, back to the critique: I did NOT notice that it was snow, unfortunately. I think there's a sense of speed there which makes me think of rain instead, since snow wouldn't drop all that fast, save for a very strong wind pushing it down.
And the hair... Well, consider me a dumb idiot because I just checked and it turns out that the root of her hair IS considerably darker. It's just not as extreme as it is in your art so I took it for the top of her head being away from the light source (and thus in shadow), rather than it being the color of her bloody hair.
