Hard to describe in only a few words.
Basically, when, with artistic practice, you [come to] know the characters (how to portray them, how to pose them, etc), you can render them doing anything.
In this case , to simply model Jude & Caitlin having the same/similar pose and emotional reactions as Calvin & Hobbes did upon seeing the alien (and the alien vice versa)!
