Description Red hair is characterized by high levels of the reddish pigment pheomelanin and relatively low levels of the dark pigment eumelanin. Approximately 1% to 2% of the human population has red hair. It occurs more frequently (between 2% and 6% of the population) in northern and western Europeans, and their descendants, and at lower frequencies throughout other parts of the world.

Red hair appears in people with two copies of a recessive gene on chromosome 16 which causes a mutation in the MC1R protein. It is associated with fair skin color, lighter eye colors (gray, blue, green, and hazel), freckles, and sensitivity to ultraviolet light.

Cultural reactions have varied from ridicule to admiration; many common stereotypes exist regarding redheads and they are often portrayed as fiery-tempered.

The Greek historian Dio Cassius described Boudica, the famous Celtic Queen of the Iceni, to be "tall and terrifying in appearance... a great mass of red hair... over her shoulders."

A fragment by the Greek poet Xenophanes describes the Thracians as blue-eyed and red haired. Also, several mythological characters from Homer's Iliad, (themselves purportedly Greek) are described as being "red-haired" including Menelaus and Achilles.

Queen Elizabeth I of England was a redhead, and during the Elizabethan era in England, red hair was fashionable for women.

In Medieval times, red hair was believed to be a mark of a beastly sexual desire and moral degeneration. Montague Summers, in his translation of the Malleus Maleficarum, notes that red hair and green eyes were thought to be the sign of a witch, a werewolf or a vampire; "Those whose hair is red, of a certain peculiar shade, are unmistakably vampires".

Ancient Egyptians associated both red-haired humans and red-colored animals with the god Set, considering them to be favored by the powerful and temperamental deity.

'Redheadday' is the name of a Dutch festival that takes place each first weekend of September in the city of Breda, the Netherlands. The two-day festival is a gathering of people with natural red hair, but is also focused on art related to the color red.

All of the above is from the Wikipedia 'Red hair' page.

Well, you are now either totally bored or totally fascinated (like I was) after reading all these weird and wonderful facts about red hair. I admit the title was just a cop out because I couldnt think of anything better to call this one, but as it lead me to such a wealth of knowledge I now consider myself lucky. Wooden stake and garlic next time I'm doing a shift at work with the red haired lady then!

Thanks as always for comments and faves.

hmmm... I did not know that... Elizabeth the 1st being a redhead... I knew...  but then she was the daughter of Henry Tudor... himself a red head and evidently impotent when it came to having male heirs....  by the way... awesome artwork!

The 'Red haired Maiden' is the one that always eluded me, not for the want of trying. As for this young lady, with her braided red locks and Celtic inscribed armour; Morigan or Magda two feisty red haired females of the de Dannan, spring immediately to mind! Nice render and view point, no trick evident yet!

Also, the Celts died themselves blue with wode before battle, which must have made a startling contrast with their red hair.

Gorgeous red head!

You have to love the style of the Celts, charging into battle against highly organised well armoured Roman soldiers totally naked, covered in blue dye and yelling like lunatics. I hope somewhere in my British heritage there is some Celtic blood (it would explain a few things, haha). Thanks for the comment Hermie!

Here's one you left out..... they also have the thickest hair. Take 2 women - one red, the other, anything else - and all things being equal, the red will have more hair. Learned it in cosmetology. (Yes, there are exceptions to the rule.) And I think the color is a big turn-on for lots of men. Even my hubby jokes that if anything happens to me, he's going for a red next. Of course I remind him he won't live long enough for that to happen if he doesn't shutup LOLzzzzzzz
nice render and I like the expression

Absolutely fascinating breakdown, Sins. I think we may need to start reffering to you as "Proffessor Sins", Haha. As to the whole Red-Head phenomenon? It's been mentioned by others, but, I have to admit I share in thier weakness for Fem Red-Heads. Put a women in front of me, Red Haired and Green Eyed with very lite, almost ivory skin and I'm basically volunteering to be her Slave. It's sad, but true.

I've only ever had the privledge of being the lover of one Red-Headed women and, in my experience anyway, learned that most if not all of the "Firecracker" stories are true. Wild in a dozen different ways, but always fun. Plus, the Curtains matched the Drapes, which was Amazingly sexy.

I have to mentioned that as outstanding as the above Art Piece is, she reminds me a great deal of Hammer (or Sister Hannah) from Fable 2. God, thinking about that just reminds me of how badly I wanted to be able to hook up with Hammer in that game. I mean, they didn't even try to hide the fact that the Character wanted Sparrow. Badly. Ugh, dang you Peter Monlenux...

You and me both Glen, haha.

Hmm, Sister Hannah huh? I will have to look into that, I dont know the character but she sure sounds fun. I have never played a Fable game (I know, bad me) but it sounds like I should!

The First Fable? Meh, you're not missing much. You could easily go to Fable-Wiki and get caught up. Fable II-III though? Wow, almost perfect games. Deep immerssion, lots of choice, and the game engine is so lush and gorgeous it could make an artist climax. Just outstanding. As to Hannah? Yeah, she's without question one of the Highlights of Fable II, and not just because of her great dialogue.

7Sins7 In reply to ManiaChris [2010-11-16 19:31:57 +0000 UTC]

Its a slight trick of perspective that her breasts look that large, the camera is angled up with her chest closer to the viewer than her head. Having said that, I know a lot of people whose ideal woman has breasts bigger than her face, haha.

Fascinating stuff. Being Black Irish, it's interesting that such a small percentage of the redheads come from Ireland... And my own experience is that most 'real' redheads come from the factory with a temper.

Beautiful work, my friend!
