In this unusual depiction of Lazarus and the Rich Man, the artist accentuating the plight of this neglected stratum of the society intentionally left the pauper’s face to appear hazy. Distinctively, the features of the robust man were well defined to emphasize the glorious splendor attributed to the upper echelon of humanity. The artist further elucidates that both men were undressed for different reasons; the unclad Lazarus shows his destitute condition while the unclothed Rich Man signifies his disgrace in lavishing the dog with food rather than giving morsels to Lazarus. The snake on the table represents the Man’s gluttony, which the artist says, has a setback on his physical condition.
