An interesting challenge, especially at the beginning I liked to use pictures as a template to see how far I could get. I never concentrated on the details like that. Therefore I am impressed by your work. And I agree with your comments, the last one is the best.

Let me tell you, you'd think copying a photograph with only one light would be the easiest thing in the world. I think this took me a solid part of a week, LOL! Maybe that's because I need to improve on my lighting/composition knowledge, though.
Do you still use photography/other pictures as inspiration, or do you go off what's in your head and light it from there?

At the beginning I also tried out how close you can get to reality with Iray and the light sources in DAZ, my beginner conclusion was: pretty close, but it also has limits.
Lighting is probably one of the most important and difficult things.
If you try to copy an image 1:1, it's extremely hard. I mostly just tried to take the look, the mood or pose / characters. Also don't have the patience to tinker 1 week.
Yes, I still like to use other media today as inspiration or even a model (which I see as a challenge for me). Especially 2D pictures, animes, movies, games or photos often inspire me to try that in 3D. I only try to stay away from other 3D pictures, that seems too much to me after copying.
But you mix all possible sources of inspiration in your head anyway and in the end you get something out of it.
Only yesterday I started a scene which clearly comes from a music video.
