God of fire bring your light
Forger of sun help me now
Guardian of the shore will sleep in your warmth
Lull the folk of cold water
Banish the serpents of the dark
To the river let me go and fetch my son away

Amorphis - Silent Waters

I've had a crap render of this sitting on my hard drive for about 2 years. I got into this song a few years back, and really, really wanted to do some artwork related to it, but I just couldn't find the headspace between commissions to get it right. Last night, I junked the old one and did the one I really wanted to do.

About the Picture
I ended up reading about LemminkΓ€inen today while I was making this, which is what the song 'Silent Waters' is actually about. I now know that the 'son' was a grown-up hero and his mother was the one who went and got him out of the river (and ultimately arranged to have him brought back to life). Not being massively well-read on my Finnish mythology (shame on me!), my version is just what I kept visualising when I heard the song. Oh, and the guy isn't intended to be Tomi Joutsen out of Amorphis either - I just wanted to make my protagonist attractive!

This is The Very Tirst time I see The Ferryman taking a deceased one this seriously, that is, The Ferryman has indeed made an exception and allowed someone else to carry his loved one across The River of Tuonela.

As it is widely known, the Ferryman, as well as the Death himself, are indeed beyond bribes of any kind. Therefore I am most intrigued how much of love and determination towards someone there would exist in this universe.

I myself have yet to be tested to the ultimate extent of how much I care of my special ones. I wonder how I would do.

Thank You SeedyDeedee for this.

Yours,

msumu

Thank you so much for the lovely comment, and it's so nice to hear from someone who knows the mythology.

Wow. Amazing work. You did such an awesome job on the wet clothing -- even if one gets the drips done correctly in postwork, getting the clothing to hang (as though wet) is the tricky part. This looks completely natural... or, I suppose, SUPERnatural.

Ooh, thanks! I wasn't sure the wet clothing and drips had come out that well.

Surely, you jest! I can't do "wet" to save my life. So my characters shall remain safely dry and comfy. Though, you know, my pics to tend to run in that direction anyway... while yours... Yeah, dry and comfy don't really show up much in your images!! Love them, though, in all their creepy, undead glory.
