According to old tales, PhantumpΒ are stumps possessed by the spirits of children who died while lost in the forest.Imagine as a pokemon, the little child inside them crying out for their mommy and daddies to come save them. They're hungry and cold and dying, but nobody came until a trainer found their trapped soul, only to enslave them for fights. All of the dead children.
I thought I'd make this creepier rather than "sexy?" given sad sad children.

But, you can also look at it as you adopting the little spirit, and not all people could use pokemon for fighting, though most would. Basically, its possible that the Phantump will find a good trainer and have a happy existence with them. I do have to wonder how they feel when becoming a Trevenant though...
