Description “Afterflood” Pencil on acid free Illustration Board 40” x 30”

This almost kicked my ass, I started it in early April completed it the last day of August.

In the area where I live there is a flood plain, every spring these trees are by and large underwater. I came upon this place when the waters receded- I was blown away by the complex movements of line; limbs, branches, twigs and brambles that seemed to be hanging on for dear life. Because it was this complex I had to draw it, the composition was inspired by one of my heroes Franz Kline, often abstraction is the catalyst to my compositions, my previous drawing being inspired by Pollock. The unexpected difficulty in drawing thousands of branches weaving over and under, lost lines, found lines and keeping track of all of it was a bit crazy, but rather Zen at the same time. I worked form life, photos and pieces of twigs that I collected it was quite the journey. After almost eight months on trees I’m off to do a portrait, can't wait.

Woot. Congratulations. I have to admit, keeping track of complex patterns, trying to copy a photo, can just leave you turned around. Unbelievably. I know it.

Really like the sense of branch shapes in the low sun. Good stuff.

(your work is proof (too me) that realism is the true beginning of all art...)

I just read in an interview with you that you listen to Death Metal... I thought that was the coolest thing.  I figure you might appreciate some of the more macabre and complex Death Metal artwork there is out there; being that the complexity of it reminds me of your 'forest' pieces.

I love drawing trees, but this would have served me a catastrophic overdose! Having done similar work, I can appreciate the puzzle aspect; in this drawing, I almost have to compartmentalize it to appreciate everything you have done here. Just superhuman effort, you set a precedent with your work. Congrats on this!

When I draw I try to use some kind of measuring tool, be it a pencil or ruler use as a guide ... But, with the staggering amount of complex detail in this image.. how do you go about accomplishing it without losing your sanity???? or maybe I'm wrong,, this could possibly be done just by using only your visual judgement....!?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

1nimra In reply to Cloudstrive [2012-01-31 14:33:17 +0000 UTC]

yes and no, i plot the main branches and then i draw the secondary ones then go from back to front, i use hash marks that are akin to a grid to get the major branches in. If the drawing is large or overly complex i might go to the bother of using a grid but at time this grid can just get in the way so the branches in a sense become the grid. as far as losing my sanity its been gone for years

Wow what an amazing feat. What ordinary people perceive as insane, we see genius. I just can't imagine ever doing this.. It would take me 3 years to accomplish such thing. Thanks for sharing it with us

when i see this done and on a screen at that, i feel the same, is like it wasn't me that did it, sound strange i know. As im working im so involved i dont realize what it takes.

Looks to me like Andrew Wyeth on drugs. To do this drawing had to take more balls than a pool table has ! I do see some Pollock in this one. Thanks for capturing what my eyes enjoy while walking in my nearby Oak forest.
