Description

This is a bit unusual showing it with me in the shot, but I needed it for something so here I am in all my aging beauty… at least you can see the size this way

I have thought long and hard about the title and I’m going with the most direct  and open,,,“Gabriella” it does have a narrative but each person needs to find that for themselves.  I want this to represent a universal young woman, pretty, and venerable at the same time-innocent and timeless. Although it’s the hair that interested me to draw this, I think her story emanates from her eyes.

I think I’m half-done 450 hours so far or a bit more,80% of this drawing will be this wild curly hair.  I’m working from about 60 photos that I took of the model and have very light hash  marks akin to a grid which are hard to pick up at the scale you’re seeing it.  I use grids or hash marks for large works preferring not to use them on small drawing.

Thanks for looking Armin

this---> " At times i want to just go back to abstraction which i did for many years although i always felt it wasn't my true calling" how do you know when it happens? I mean, how do you feel the true calling? right now i cant even decide on my media thats why i use them all. how did you know which was the right one for you? how will i know which one is the right one for me? (given there will be a right one for me ever...else i am just gonna mix the media for as long i am able to hold brushes)

you just know ...i love all art forms and many medias but i cannot do them all in a short life span we mortals have so i had to chose and i chose graphite because it felt "like home" to me, but i have been doing a lot of abstract photography in the last years and it satisfies that urge

I always love seeing the hand behind the art! This photo however has revealed more than I was expecting though, your artwork is on an infinitely larger scale than I had imagined. Kudos to you, this really just blows my mind, the amount of time, energy and patience that you put into your artwork is astounding and puts me and my impatience to shame. I am absolutely, thoroughly impressed! Sitting here, looking at this at work kills me because you have inspired to go back and put pencil to paper!

in the last five  years Ive been thinking of drawing not something I have to get done finish and sell but a journey of discovery this might sound cliche yet it wasn't until i change my outlook that working, the process as completely different then the outcome not more important but a part of the processes that i never cherished as much as i do now, thats why the scale its a grand journey though what seem so daunting at times.

Looks great... what else should I say!?...

Wish I had the time to draw the pictures I´m dreaming of... I feel blocked in that what I could draw...

One question... I hope you remember it.. I asked you if you come to Germany this year. You sad maybe in may. Are you visiting germany this month?

Have you ever thought about teaching other artists here in Germany? An two week seminar? The great and god artists here are so blocked and rude... that sucks.

Best wishes from sunny Hamburg. Hope you are fine.

I spent 1800 hours on Simplicity of Silence....yet time is irrelevant to good art, its takes me so long because of my interest in details not because i think it makes for "better" art. Often the artist who find a simpler voice make more powerful work and sometimes not.  At times i want to just go back to abstraction which i did for many years although i always felt it wasn't my true calling but i did love it hell out of it, i could do three works a week, not that it was easy though.

Wow...these numbers are cosmic to me...Anyways this is something I am into too, so you are really an inspiration along with others of course, but your works are titanic, that's why I'm, for lack of stronger word, very impressed. Keep 'em coming!

Wow, if only I could just sit there and observe as you work on it. At such large scales that you work on, grids are a practical necessity, I guess.

( I personally can't use grids, they go against my instincts, so I rely on measuring with my pencil and few markings here and there. )

1nimra In reply to SUNNYNARULA18 [2014-04-29 20:24:01 +0000 UTC]

there are many ways of measuring, some hate grids i am just careful not to lose my translation and the life within when it so structuerd with a grid, it helps and it can hinder, thanks for the good words

Hi there, I'm an admirer of your amazing work. Pencil is one of my first love, and I tried realism too, but I'm very far from this kind of result .
In the last few years I moved to other techniques, watercolour mainly, and lately I discovered how much grid is helpful to reach a good result.

I'm planning to make a series of portraits of artist that I like and inspires me. I really like this WIP with artist, I'd like to use your picture as a reference. May I?

Look forward to see Gabriella complete.

Regards
Nicola
