Description here is the usual painting process I use .
This time I didnt made a clean artline ,
instead I went direct to the flats , because I wanted a more 3D/CG look .
The most complicated layer is always the flat colors .
and the sahdows , the more fun .

enjoy , and any question , just adk.

Superb. simple, yet very didactic. I think I get most of the tutorial. I just donΒ΄t get what you mean by "occlusion". Is it an aditional step or is it just a fancy name for ...darker shadows? I am a hobbist, so I donΒ΄t understand all the terms related around design.
And how do you make layer groups? Thanks in advance.
I will credit you when I put this into practice. Fave!

Thanks for your interest.
Here is the link for a journal I wrote about the occlusion .
I hope it can clarify your doubts .

So...with the shadows and occlusion(?) you used mainly dark grey and grey and with the brightness and highlights you used a very light grey and white? I've never seen this method before and...well...apparently it works really well cause I seriously thought that was 3D. Any chance you have a close up on the layers?

Hi there

How exactly do you create each layer and how do you composite them to give the pic such a CG look?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

Octo-moose [2010-08-19 13:40:27 +0000 UTC]

Great technique, can you explain a little more regarding the execution of this style, how the layers are done and compiled etc.

GStevensArt [2010-08-19 08:30:18 +0000 UTC]

Your work looks so ridiculously cool that I am always amazed. So I see that you create separate layers for flat colors, shadows and occlusion (I had to look that one up), and brightness and highlights. So what then, do you change the opacity or the mode to overlay so that they show on top of one another?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

14-bis In reply to GStevensArt [2010-08-19 15:21:34 +0000 UTC]

oh yes , those layers have different opacity and some , like brightness are in overlay mode.

I'm sure that somebody has said something like this before, but brilliant idea doing the shadows, occlusion, and highlights on different layers. I've done it for 3D renders but never thought to use it for 2D drawings.
Consider your technique borrowed good sir.

well , I work on 3d ( modeling and render ) , so it was natural to me to apply the
same technique .

Well comparing your tutorial to your WIP, it seems you painted/sculpted the grays on a separate layer. Looks very much like a 3D model. I'd like to try doing that instead of using the burn tool.

Oh and to warn you too, shadows are really a deep blue, no shadow is truly black or in a neutral color such as any variation of gray unless the environment is gray.

Not to bombard you with so many comments, but your art is just that amazing. I normally don't comment so much to so many pieces unless it's great art or I love a piece. But anyways this is great. And it looks so easy but I know I could never do this. XDD
The final product was just amazing! And the WIP is so helpful!

Awesome job! And thanks for sharing!
