Description She said create the world, so I did. I made it dark and dusty, coughed up from my own black lungs. I gave the trees an ashen hue and the ground a color to match the starless sky. The creatures were murmuring oozes, globs of drying acrylic that inked across the orb of my bubbling imagination.

Repulsing, it was in fact the product of an industrial mind. I was born from man's smog goddess and, if memory serves me, her breath was laced in exhaust which I inhaled nightly with her songs. She was soothing and complacent, her voice smokey like a hazy bar. No one could deny her features were hideous beyond belief. Her skin dripped pollution like morphine into veins, into deep red rivers to turn them ebony and clogged. Her eyes glistened obsidian, sharp and cold if you didn't know her at all. I knew she was lost and ashamed, as her mother, my grandmother, would often remind her of the destruction her presence caused. I loved her like grandmother nature never could.

Grandmother was ,indeed, a grand mother; full of herself, and rightfully so, she was beautiful. Shoulder blades smooth as sand dunes, hair blue and ever-moving. Her voice was a harmony of every heartbreaking, lovemaking bird song. The first time I laid eyes on her I wanted nothing more than banishment to the darkest corners of space - her beauty thundered and eroded my significance to an awful pebble. My mother was nothing more than a shadow come alive and grandmother nature wanted her suffocating daughter gone - swept away like cigarette smoke.

So mother and I gathered our clouds up into our lungs, soaked up chemicals we sweated in our separate stratospheric rooms and the air was clear for the first time. Man rejoiced, their hallelujahs pounding rejection onto my eardrums. Mother held my hand tight as cancerous cells and wept acid rain to dispel their unashamed disregard for our leaving. They settled, shrugged and raising their umbrellas went about their day. Still, the time for moving on was now. Mother bent down to my level, eyes glassy and black, "Sweetheart, create a world for you and me. Make a place where we will be loved for our horrid condition."

The taste of metal always on our tongue, carbon monoxide seeping through our pores, bathing in the radiation of our black hole sun; dank and disturbed is where we are loved.

wow - what an incredible story you've painted - the creations that kill & yet want to be loved & dwell in their own horrid mists. i love the supremacy exuding from grandmother nature - it's captured that ancient feeling of the roots of the earth from a new perspective.

that's truly what i've gotten from this, i suppose - another perspective, deliciously dark, to tuck away in my mind. we can relate to each other no matter how vast our differences; running away into ourselves...

how beautiful. Out of curiosity, who's the daughter (I'm assuming the narrator is a girl). 'Cause the mother is pollution and the grandmother is Mother Nature, so what would the daughter be? I loved how you personified these iconic concepts.

Wow. Just wow. Are you thinking of expanding this? If not, I wish you would. The vast potential is this is obvious, and you have only just scratched the surface of possibilities!

well I appreciate your enthusiasm for my piece!
I don't think I will expand this, though. It isn't
really what I normally write so I don't think I would
enjoy writing something longer on it. Maybe once I'm completely
bereft of ideas, I'll return to this but I don't know, sorry. :/

Oh, well. I tried. I'll have to read some of the stuff that you normally write then, if the things you are less comfortable with are this good!

Wow, great personifications in this piece - so easy to imagine it all as a sort of an animation (Hayao Miyazaki could pull off something like this, I think). Very interesting and mythical.

Chrysalite In reply to 0hgravity [2012-12-27 00:59:25 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I noticed the link to the illustration after I had sent the comment. I think it's pretty cool - the contrast between the two colourscapes is effective, and I like how Grandmother Earth's hair surrounds the two other characters.

0hgravity In reply to MissOliviaLee [2012-10-25 17:55:11 +0000 UTC]

awesome!
yeah, what'd you have in mind?

I was thinking mother nature standing, turned away from the mother and child who are kind of huddled behind her?
just for general composition.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MissOliviaLee In reply to 0hgravity [2012-10-25 18:26:32 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, yeah! Thats what I was seeing too! I was thinking about how to put it all together though, and it might be cool to do a long vertical painting. Mother nature on top in light and beauty with her back turned so you can see her hair and shoulder blades and maybe her profile. Then around her lower back area the painting can fade down to blackness, the mother and child together below her shrouded in darkness and fog. When I read it I imagined their world like cracking mud with black ink rivers running through. Have you seen the film Princess Mononoke? If you have, I also pictured something like what happened after they killed the Great Forest Spirit.

MissOliviaLee In reply to 0hgravity [2012-10-26 00:40:31 +0000 UTC]

So I have a few of questions. First, do you want them to look completely human, or can I make them a little different? Not so much with Grandmother Nature, but as far as the mother and child go. Second, How old do you want each of them to look? I wasn't sure what to keep to for that. Third, How do you feel about nudity? I haven't planned on showing any naughty parts, but with Grandmother I thought it might be appropriate to reveal her bare back so long as she's turned so nothing really shows. Hell, I could show them all naked if you want but I thought I'd ask first, haha.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

0hgravity In reply to MissOliviaLee [2012-10-26 01:38:03 +0000 UTC]

1) I'm fine with them not looking completely human as they are immortal beings
but I wouldn't go too far with that

2) I was thinking Grandmother Nature (GN) would be look maybe 40ish so older but not
like old woman old. For the smog goddess I was thinking middle to late 20s - a more
naive look than GN and then for the narrator I was thinking 12ish so she is still quite
young but old enough to start to see the dynamics of the relationship between GN and mother.

3)For GN I'd be fine with revealing a bare back. for the other two I was thinking the surrounding
smog and pollutants would almost hang like rags on them? hmmm not completely sure about that though.

I have no idea how to post links on here, but I just came upon this nifty thing- [link] -and thought it might be a potential set up for the painting. I don't know, I really like how it fades into another scene. Perhaps I could do yours in a similar format, as it sounds kinda like what we talked about?
