My 1D has arrived. It is immaculate. The only marks on it (almost), were caused by me.
It's only flaw (in the fashion that i recieved it), was the the hot shoe appeared to be smushed in some, making it VERY difficult to put my 580EX on. SO- after deliberating, i said FUCK IT!, and "fixed" the problem with a flathead screwdriver. Yup, the hotshoe's virginity was violently taken by a screwdriver, which left it's mark. But at least now i can use a flash!
there will be new, CCD-powered photos up on here soon enough.

with some *magic* my 100-400 turned into an old 300 2.8L I am actually just awaiting payment for my 100-400 and then it's off to another photog. It was pretty nice, but i just hated the push-pull system. And now that i have the 300 2.8, i am going to get the 1.4ex II TC here in a month or so. 420 f/4. That will be nice. Hey, about that scanner, can you scan in a slide, and send the full resolution image to andrew@andrewsaurus.com? That would be really cool if you can, I want to check out the quallity on that thing if you dont mind. Oh yeah, and i sold my ST-E2 as well. lol Oh yeah, and my god I am craving creating a studio....

xEOSx In reply to par-a-bola [2005-09-25 03:38:12 +0000 UTC]
disgusting. I HATE YOU! yeah, i don't think anybody in their right mind would like push-pull zooms anymore. How much you getting the 300 for? I just sold my 550ex and st-e2, got a sekonic l-358, and in the next 6 months i'm getting into a Pocketwizard system. Max resolution @ max DPI will create a like 1gb file... i already checked on that. How about bigass resolution, at 75 dpi? that's the max your monitor displays anyways.
the scanner's dynamic range isnt the best, which is kinda frustrating if its a contrasty slide.

par-a-bola In reply to xEOSx [2005-09-25 05:21:23 +0000 UTC]
Well I already bought the 300 and it got here yesterday, cost 2700. Not the best price, but hey, i got a 300!! The thing I noticed about the slides, was the dynamic range, it looks like your scanner doesnt do the best in that department.

very true about the DR.... that's my big complaint with it.
i want a 1D. so much DR.

par-a-bola In reply to xEOSx [2005-09-25 05:34:00 +0000 UTC]
d00d, the 20D has more DR than the 1D. 1DmkII has more DR than 20D.

xEOSx In reply to par-a-bola [2005-09-25 05:35:52 +0000 UTC]
yeah, but i can never shoot a 20D again... me and the 1.6 don't get along. And the AF, and metering, and handling....
i'm a 1-series convert. and i can't afford a MK2 yet!

You know I have the XT and yes the autofocus system is for shit. And no spot metering(even my old Sony 707 had spot metering). Did you think about waiting and getting the new 5D? 12MP, full frame, should be under $3000. Don't know about the autofocus or metering system.

i see no reason for me to get any of Canon's FF sensor bodies right now, or anytime soon.
For the price, i'd much rather have a used 1D MKII, or a 1D MK1 with a nice lens or flash system.
have you read about the way that FF sensors make the edges of the frame darker, and give good lenses bad images? check out [link] sometime- its a site aimed towards digital photographers, and has LOTS of info in the forums.
I think that the 1D MK2 is the camera to beat. I've gotten used to the 1-series layout (somewhat!), and can't go back to the command dial (or whatever its called).

MattBenn8 In reply to xEOSx [2005-09-28 06:01:43 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I read Fred Mirandas site all the time.
Regarding the 5D, I had heard the vignetting(shading in the corners) is not an issue if you're using full frame lens'. My 30mm would do it, but thats a 'digital' lens. I don't think you'd have a problem with any of your L lens'. Maybe the consumer zooms would loose some edge sharpness, but at 12MP you could crop with NO problem.
The benefit of the full frame(i've heard) is the lack of noise. ISO 50 increasing at 1/3 stops and ISO 3200 was described as 'superb'. Man I'd love to have a superb ISO 800, let alone 3200.
Your L lens were MADE for a full frame camera.
I don't know anything about the ergonomics, I only have experience with my camera, but for the same money I'd take a serious look at the 5D.
Of course you would lose 60mm at the long end of your 70-200. But just think what you could do with the fisheye.
Peace,
Matt

xEOSx In reply to MattBenn8 [2005-09-28 08:55:39 +0000 UTC]
the veignnetting (SP?) isn't because of the lens, or the older FF sensor's design. It's just the WAY that the sensor sees the light coming onto it. Pixels read light directly, as film can get it from any angle.
Using a FF body would be NO change for me, because that's what i'm doing now. I prefer it to the 1.6......
I don't WANT to crop anything from a wide image, i use wide lenses for a reason.
yeah, i'll be able to explain a lot of this better if we meet up and stuff....

The new work looks good. I'd love to see some more. You're probably too busy going out and playing with the new fisheye to post more pics.
How do you like tthe 70-200mm is? I'm thinking about that one or saving myself the $1500 and just going with the f4. Most of the telephoto stuff I've done has been outside anyway.
By the way, I just sold my 50 1.8 to help pay for the Sigma 30mm 1.4 and that is a super sweet piece of glass. It does have some spotty focus issues, but when it's dead on(about 75%) of the time it's incredible.
Have a good one.
Matt

Did you consider the Sigma fisheye? It's 8mm, f/4 with autofocus for about $500. They have a 14mm f2.8 also, but that ones about $800.
Nice gallery, by the way.

i actually use a canoscan 8400f, it's a flatbed scanner but it does medium format and slide film as well as 35mm for $130usd it's pretty decent.. nothing to print from, but good enough for scans to the web.

brian613 [2005-09-03 20:25:23 +0000 UTC]
my suggestion is the bronica sq-ai or sq-a or sq.
it syncs at all shutter speeds, it's fully manual, and lenses are relatively cheap. The quality i get in the slides are astounding, the scan's don't do it any justice. you'll need a light meter though, or another camera to bring with you to meter.

Hey, thanks for friending me. As to your lens choices, I am in somewhat the same position as you. I purchased the 300 f/4 IS, and i really like it. Now i need something in the shorter focal length range, i am pretty set on a 70-200 IS. But was seriously thinking of the 135/2 or 85/1.2. I sold 3 of my lenses and now need stuff to fill 24-200. After i used the IS on the 300, i dont know that i can ever go back to a NON-IS telephoto lens. It's that great. I can easly shoot at 1/60th at 300mm with IS. No problem. And supposidly the IS on the 70-200 is even better than the version the 300 is equiped with. But if i ever get into portrait photography, instead of sports, I am going to want that 85/1.2 sometime. Eh, who knows...
