Hi , i'm the founder of #fighting-laziness . It's come to our attention that you left our group, and we just wanted to know the reason, since we can always use opinions and criticism to make our group better. Sorry if we bothered you...

rschuch In reply to Sshitsu [2011-11-01 14:03:46 +0000 UTC]

Actually, no reason at all, other than getting a whole bunch of art to clear out of my inbox everyday. I had joined several groups at once and it was just getting nuts, and I hadn't even submitted anything to your group yet, so unfortunately, your group had way too many submissions for me to ever have time to look through. ALSO, I didn't realize I could just "unwatch" the group without leaving it until yesterday, but then what's the point, right? I appreciate your asking, though! I had other reasons for quitting a few of the others and no one cared why. You have a great group with a WIDE variety of art! Best of luck to you!

Thanks! I'll take a look. I love looking at a variety of different paper art - so much out there and a lot to learn from. I was in a group before, but it was mostly anime characters and paper cranes and got old quick.

Wow I've never seen such complex paper cut out pictures... Impressive stuff, I think you've inspired me to get back to art! I've been neglecting it for several months on account of lack of motivation... if think some ships are in order!

There's stuff out there that blows ME away! I belong to a group called GAP (Guild of American Papercutters) and, maybe I'm just older now with less patience, but I look at what some of these members do and think, "Man, how'd he DO that? My thumb hurts just looking at it." But, yeah, motivation is always a problem, since I don't sell much of it. What medium do you work in? Let me see what you come up with - maybe some of your motivation will rub off on me!

You inspired me to try a more detailed papercutting of a sailingship, I just started I already know I will get very frustrated by all the ropes

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

rschuch In reply to Maleijn [2011-05-04 22:13:54 +0000 UTC]

Just take your time and don't make it too small; the bigger you go, the larger and easier the detail is to cut out. And don't be afraid to "wing it" - I often make changes on the fly as I cut if something doesn't seem like it's going to work. And remember - tape is your friend! If I know I'm cutting a lot of thin lines, I'll pre-cut some small strips of scotch tape and put them off to the side ahead of time so if I mess up and cut too far (and with my eyesight slowly getting worse, it happens), I have a patch ready to pop underneath.

I have 4 or 5 projects I have planned out, including a couple of ships, but no time to work on them! Hopefully I'll be able to get a couple easier ones done this weekend.

Maleijn In reply to rschuch [2011-05-05 12:42:13 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, I'll keep these tips in mind
But it is going to be quite small, about 20x20 centimeters, because it's going to be framed for my grandfathers birthday.

And I will think of the tape, I'm going to need it

Thanks for your support, it's much appriciated

That's great - I'm sure your Grandfather will love it! And 8" x 8" isn't a bad size - much of my stuff is 5 x 7. A lot has to do with paper thickness; thinner paper is easier to cut and better for detail.

Be sure to post the finished result!

Nice piece! Thanks for the inclusion in your gallery. I saw Wynton and his group about 16 or 17 years at the Bob Carr in Orlando. Marcus Roberts opened with 4 or 5 solo piano pieces by Monk, Morton and Ellington before Marsalis came out with the septet. Though the memory of the actual tunes he played has faded, I still remember the warmth of his horn and just being entranced by that tone. What total command he had of his instrument, and this was well before he'd gone on to head the Lincoln Center and write some of his more experimental classical crossover compositions and won the Pulitzer Prize. He was still a hungry young lion trying to make his mark, and I myself was a relative newcomer to jazz.

I'm not as familiar with his playing as I want to be, but I was certainly impressed by his and the rest of the orchestra's playing. I liked him for kind of the same reasons you did, he's got a nice, comforting tone and really takes it easy when soloing.

I really appreciate all the favorable responses to my paper art! It's not usually one of the more accepted art forms and I really had no intention of posting more than 3 or 4 figuring they'd probably be ignored. Little did I know ...

This is such a cool little group! I've found so much already that's inspiring to me - so many great artists on here, and such a diverse representation of the art community. After being blown away by so much of what I've seen lately, it feels good to know that perhaps I can contribute to that feeling of inspiration I keep getting.

Get busy and do good work!

Thank you. I had about a 6 year stretch where that's all I did, so all I can say is practice, practice. If you draw something, think about how you'd convert it to cut paper.
