How I see it is past lives and still have some traits of the creature. for example, I believe I have a past life as a cat and have traits of a cat. I have memories and everything about that life too. That's the Therian part of it (Though it's technicallyΒ a part of Otherkin)
There's also Fictionkin and that's when you believe you had a past life of a fictional character and still have traitsΒ of the character. some people might think it's a bit weird though- (I should know, I try to be careful about what I tell people sometimes)
Then there are other things, like the controversial Factkin. That's basically when someone kins someone who has been alive once or is alive in the present. (Some FictionkinΒ sources and overlap with Factkin, but there are some Fictionkin that are called Factkin when they really aren't)
