Yeah, I've been looking up figurines and I want to purchase some super sculpey when I run out of my horde of Sculpey III, thank you for the tips. Do you use your home oven? Well I'm sure you do since your pieces I believe are big? Have you thought about using Polyester or epoxy putty?

I do use a home oven, since it's listed as the primary
tool for baking by polymer clay companies...
...actually, I should say I use a toaster oven because
my large oven doesn't work. I've contemplated making my own
oven for some time now. There are instructions online if you
search around. It's basically a plywood box lined with tin foil
with a "heat gun" inserted through a hole, and a thermometer to
monitor the temperature. With this type of setup you can bake
much larger pieces...
...with my toaster oven I'm usually forced to bake things in
sections and them piece them together if I wanted to create
something large.
Yes I've used epoxy. I use it primarily around my armature to
help strengthen it. You can use it to sculpt as well of course
depending on the curing time. I've seen some amazing and tiny
sculptures done entirely with epoxy.

I've never used polyester though. What types
of benefits do you think polyester would provide to a piece?
Or were you just thinking in terms of superficial detail/textures?

Yeah, I just bought a toaster oven... Wow heat guns are cheap. that's nice. Maybe add a little fan in there too the circulate the heat ahah. Yeah I've seen the uses of epoxy putty it seems like it would be a lot easier to use when sanding or carving your piece instead sculpey. Do you carve after baking or do you make the piece then freeze it then carve a bit and freeze again? Or do you need to living in Canada? Hmm well I suppose polyester resin would be used like any epoxy resin (just thicker)? [link]

I apologize for taking so long to reply to you. I've been a bit distracted for the last while. But I'm okay now, so back to you questions.

Yeah Epoxy Putty's flaws can often be it's benefits as well. Like you mentioned it's great for sanding, and since it doesn't require baking you can apply it quickly to surfaces that need immediate attention, such as if your Polymer sculpture came out of the over with a big crack and you needed to repair it right away before it got worse, then Epoxy Putty would be perfect in that situation. Then you can sand off any excess material.

As for carving Polymer clays like Sculpey, it should be done after you bake it. It's always possible to do it before you bake it as well but it's a little more difficult. Some firmer polymer clays allow this to be done quick easily, but most are much too soft to handle that type of technique, especially if you want a very flat and level surface. Geometric shapes are tough too, so they should always be done, or refined after baking.

That's good that things are better, and that's fine you can take as long as you want.

Yeah I bought a shit load of putty (and some polyester putty) like a month ago and last week tested them all out. I was thinking how different they were to polymer clay but after they're baked/cured they're pretty much the same. Even with sanding.
I thought that Super Sculpey would be easier to chip or cut off compared to Sculpey III because they say that it's for modeling but pieces just crack off when I'm trying to cut off excess.... Does that happen to you too?

and do you double bake? I sometimes bake things four times with 5 min cookin time each. I kind of feel like that's cheating but meh.

Do you have a spray gun? Or do you paint your pieces by hand? Or is it just a mix or clay tones? Do you use Zbrush? AAAND I'm sorry if you wrote these facts somewhere... I'll read all your journals just to be on the safe side.

Thanks I should draw you one. I was thinking the Minotauro would be a great chibi xD.

I don't do a lot of carving to my work after it's baked
so I don't have a lot of experience with large pieces cracking off,
or any techiques to prevent it from happening.
I imagine though that it should be done slowly and in small steps
like a wood carver would work.

Yeah I do multiple bakes. You can bake polymer clay as
many times as you like. You can add fresh clay to baked clay
and rebake it too, etc, as much as you want, so long as it doesn't turn black.
It can look crimson red and be perfectly find, but once
it's black that means it's burnt and the surface will bubble up
and become distorted/deformed, which is no good, but worst
of all it'll give off toxic fumes...Not good for your health.
Oh and speaking of which, always bake in a well ventilated area.
Even though polymer is not toxic to inhale it's still good practice
to take precaution.

I don't have a spray gun....yeah I have to paint everything by hand.
It's always been my least favourite part. I'm no good at painting..haha

I've tried Zbrush a few times, but I can't seem to wrap my
brain around the mechanics. I'm so used to traditional sculpting
that the digital way seems so counter-intuitive to me...
I recently downloaded 'Sculptris'. It's by the same company that makes
ZBrush, and it's a lot more user friendly from what I've tried so far.
Go download it. It's free from their site.

It would be awesome if you drew a chibi version of my Minotauro.

Yeah I've used Sculptis before and started building a face. I got a picture somewhere or the nose in progress it was really fun but it kept making my computer wheez and slow down. I tried looking for a solution for the problem and then I read that if my computer dies he's sorry (the creator). So I was like baaah and uninstalled it. I love the mirror tool that was my favorite part.

Yeah haven't gotten to the burning stage yet. ofc ofc I've watched too many polymer clay informing videos, I should be a teacher by now >8D
