I ve been thinking about your question. when I was at university today I had an idea, what could be usefull to you... I hope it will be^^:
so the first one shows, the rough positions of light and shadow: a bit above the middle of the sphere the highlight starts. Of course the highlight is a reflection as well (lamp or in this case the sky).
As you can see, there is also a lighter tone at the bottom, which is the reflection of the ground. In this case the ground is white so the reflection is white as well. If you paint your shape this way, it will already look quite nifty.
In the second sphere I did a grading in the sky because the sky always appears to be lighter where it touches the ground. Here I just made it lighter, but you could reflect a whole city's buildings in there^^ (if you got the time).
The third one: One of the most pregnant differences between glass and metal is, that in metal shaders the reflection becomes less visibly at borders, when in glass shaders the reflection becomes stronger at borders (in majority of cases). Here you can also see how a checked plane as a ground would be reflected on a sphere.
I think, when you understand, how to give this material to a sphere, you can give it to almost everything like in the fourth, a cylinder. Here as you can see I did an extra highlight. When you want it even more flat, just blur the bottom border of the sky reflection (that will do it).
So dented objects can still be difficult but I guess there is nothing to say against doing a bit of cheating ^^...
I hope I could help and if you need some further stuff, feel free to ask! greets and cheers!

Hey there!
Thank you for the detailed explanation. Sorry for replying this late, I see, that it has been a week by now already. Looking at your description and explanation it seems to be easier, than I have thought, though I need to consider some scenarios too. Like what if the glass is being covered by a non transparent layer, like a black matte layer? I guess the height of reflection also comes from the thickness of the material seen here, because while the glassed ball looks like reflecting at 3/4 of it's height, the rod seems having that around at 1/2.
I will go on and analyse your reply furthermore; thank you for the explanation!

first of all, I am sorry, I did a metal not a glass shader... (my failure) So I did not paint any transparency at all.
Here are the differences in the reflection*:
1.: Chrome, or other glean metals, no decrease of reflection;
2.: common Metal, decrease at the borders;
3.: common Glass, decrease in the middle(here also without transparency);
In highlights there are so many difference, depending on the face of the material, so I think you can just try out yourself, what you like the most. Usually industrial designers dont always paint the highlights the most realistic way, but use them to drag the attention of the client to a certain detail in their workout.
The reason why the horizontal line is reflected different in the sphere and the cylinder is because of the different bending(4).
As you might know, the light always leaves the same angle as it hits on a surface.
The reflection of the ground (4a and b) is softer in the sphere because there is a smooth bending from the bottom up, while the cylinder has a quite hard edge.
I hope, I could help you! see you soon, G

and if you want to have your material even more matte and darker, you should just darken the reflection and blur it.
