# About me
Artist's BioNatiq Jalil is a self-taught artist who believes that true art begins during those moments between being asleep and being awake.
Natiq was born in Montgomery, Alabama, where he showed a talent for art at a very early age, drawing his favorite cartoon characters exactly as they appeared on his television screen. His family moved when he was 13, and Denver, CO became the playground for his imagination. He continued to draw through his high school years and received his first commission at the age of 14, one of his father’s co-workers. It was a large drawing of the Ninja Turtles. As payment, he received his first acrylic painting set and some oil pastels. From that moment on, he became fascinated with the world of color.
After high school, Natiq became heavily involved in the spoken word poetry scene in Denver, CO and hosted several poetry nights in the city, including the celebrated, Brother Jeff’s Cultural Center and Café. He would write poetry directly onto his paintings in subtle colors to add clarity to the emotions he poured into his work and also to celebrate his love for written language. He later stopped using words in his work and focused more closely on conveying his meaning through intuitive use of color, texture and symbolism.
Natiq’s work is prized by many private collectors and can be seen in many homes and businesses in the mid-west. His work also frequents many advertisements for the arts and social change in Denver. His work has been purchased by collectors in Denver, Arizona, L.A., New York, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, New Jersey, South Africa, Sweden and many other places. He has displayed his work in venues such as Luz Gallery and the Space Gallery in Denver, and the Shadow Lounge in Pittsburgh.
He loves diversity in art (from media to subject matter) and draws much inspiration for his work from his dreams, dreams spoken of by others, anime and hip hop culture. He took a break from traditional art for a long while to focus on his daughter once he became a single father, and mostly focused on graphic design and illustration.
He moved to Pittsburgh, PA several years ago and is now returning to his love of traditional art. His feels that his work flows more freely now, and wants to continue to tell stories without words through his art in this city that is still new to him.

Natiq, your art is really amazing! I have enjoyed going through your gallery, your style is so versatile from pastels to digital I'm really astounded at how you managed to establish such great quality in all your works. I'm also an artist still figuring out my own grips. I have fallen in love with oils especially for portraiture and sometimes landscapes, I also use acrylics. I am trying to get into digital but am limited by my equipment. After seeing your art I'm really inspired to try pastels and more different types of media. I am actually working on a project of Mother Theresa in oils. I also want to ask how you manage to come up with a layout especially for your mix-media and more recent watercolours? As you'll see when if you get a chance to look at some of my works, I feel my style is mostly very constricted and the focus is on detail (sometimes works, other times not so well). I would like to eventually develop my own style which is much freer yet has the same if not better detail than my best works so far. I do not know how I can pursue this and especially when I have a message to say how I can express it effectively through my art. I have a lot to say, but don't know how I can say it through my artworks, so I wish to ask how you conceptualize such works?

Hello. Sorry it took a while to get back to you.
I can understand what you're saying. I've often struggled with letting go and just painting. But in the end, it turned out to be just that easy. Once I took that leap of faith and stopped worrying about whether I was going to mess up the next brush stroke... and just had fun... my art went to the next level.
As far as how I conceptualize my art, it follows the same principles, pretty much. I let it happen. I don't try to feel up the entire canvas anymore. I stop when it feels right. I know it's not that easy to just jump in and let everything go, so what you can do is start out with some small thumbnail sketches of what you see in your mind. That way, you can see how everything will fit on the page, and you can move forward confidently after that.
The biggest thing I can tell you is that art doesn't come to you all at once. It's done in stages. Don't try to make your finished piece right from the jump. Start light and build up layers. Add details as you go along. Slow down and enjoy the ride. That's what I've been dong, and I'm loving it.
I hope this helps. Keep up the good work. I'll check in every now and again and see how you are doing.
Sincerely,
Natiq...

Hello!
Absolutely beautiful picture (Soul Sistah)! I have a website that focuses on self love and spiritual inspiration. My participants are my students that I work with in a small rural county in the south. They are teenage girls 'at-risk' for teen pregnancy, STD's, illiteracy, and high school drop out. I try to educate them on the greatest love of all, which is the love of self. I would like to use your image on my homepage to show them how beautiful they are, with your permission. Please let me know and continue to keep exhibiting your talent. 'BEMISTAKEN'

Gretchen had mentioned that. I thought I heard someone saying 'Miss' as I left, but there were so many people around, I thought they couldn't be talking to me.
I wish I had realized.
is your contest entry on display at modern formations now? I'd like to go see it if it is.

I'm sorry I haven't been checking my DA account lately. I guess "Jess" does sound a lot like "Miss" in as big of a crowd as there was at Art All Night. I'm sure we'll run into eachother again. This is a small world we live in, afterall.
My piece isn't on display there anymore. I'm sorry. I hope that I get to display there for a solo show, one day. I'll keep you posted. ^_^
Hope all is going well with you. I'll check in here more often from now on. Ttyl.
