# About me
A Writer’s Beginning Is Never EasyBut Neither is Stopping, Once You Have Begun
Ever since I was about ten, I've always been interested in theatre and back then my main focus was the most popular category of theatre: acting. I enjoyed it quite a bit, acting out the thirty page books I was reading every time I got a room to myself, picturing stage positions (though six years ago I had no idea what they were called), and watching actors and actresses on TV. in order to pick up a few hints. My father would catch me making faces in the mirror sometimes and he'd make fun of me for it. That was where my discouragement began. Of course it was normal for him. He'd ruined every hobby I'd ever had (especially sports), so I was used to his derogatory comments about how only great looking people could ever make it in showbiz and only homosexuals were interested in musicals (he didn't say it quite that nicely). After listening to his comments for a while I eventually began to shut him out (this is the point in my life where I began to develop an "emotional shell"). I quite listening to his insults and close-minded opinions on matters that even he admitted had nothing to do with him and continued my theatre practices.
One year later I was at the top of a very small class in a very small town in Arkansas. My teacher congratulated me after every monologue performed and supported me the entire way, so I began to see him as a kind of father figure since I had shut the biological father out of my head, seeing the man on the couch only as the one who filled my fridge and took me where I needed to go on occasion.
Mr. Roberts and I were very close for a while. He took me to see shows and pointed out different things to be careful of onstage. I enjoyed my time with him, especially on these trips, until one day after seeing "The Cat in the Hat" at the Rogers Little Theatre on my twelfth birthday I asked him; "Mr. Roberts, do you think I could be a really good actor on Broadway one day?" Mr. Roberts just kinda looked at me and smiled. He stared at me for a minute, as if he were trying to tell me an answer through his brainwaves. He looked me straight in the eyes and flat out said "No."
I couldn't believe my ears. Tears swelled up in my eyes, but I wiped them away. Surely Mr. Roberts hadn't meant to crush my dreams with a single word? Maybe there was more to his answer, like in some movies where the actor would tell someone they would be better than great. I asked why. Afterward I wished I hadn't. He didn't answer. He looked at his feet solemnly and moved toward his car. I had to follow. He was my ride home after all.
Once we were in his car, he didn’t put his keys in the ignition, he didn’t put his seat belt on, he didn’t even look in his mirrors. He pulled out his laptop and showed me some pictures. I’d seen them before. He used them in class to show people the correct way to position themselves on stage. He scrolled through the pictures for a while then stopped on one. It was a cast picture from a play, about twenty years old. He told me to take a good look at the picture and tell him what they all had in common. I said that they were all on Broadway and great famous actors. He said no. That’s wasn’t the answer he was looking for. He told me they all had good stage presence. He said that most great actors were tall, with something distinct about them. He told me I was too small to amount to a great actor and probably wouldn’t ever be big enough, based on how short my family is.
I cried the whole ride home.
I spent the next few weeks sulking quite a bit. I stopped talking to Mr. Roberts unless I absolutely had to, quit reading out loud, and didn’t see any shows. I no longer saw Mr. Roberts as a father figure, I more or less saw myself as a child with no father. Just a sperm donor. Then, one day, Mr. Roberts assigned a writing assignment in class. We were to write a half page monologue. So I wrote… and wrote… and wrote… and failed the paper.
I didn’t fail the paper because it was bad; I failed it because it was too long. Mr. Roberts actually told me to keep adding to it because I had a good imagination, and before I knew it was looking a full script written in bad handwriting and an odd format that I pulled out of my head. I showed Mr. Roberts and he told me he’d accept it as extra credit to make up for the monologue assignment. Ever since I’ve been writing all sorts of things, just for fun. I may never be the world’s greatest actor, but I’ll make it to Broadway some day. Whether it’s onstage, or under the “Written By:” section on the front of a script.
Now, ironically enough, I haven’t submitted a single script. Oh well. I began writing all sorts of things after that. I guess all kinds of opportunities can open up even from a bad situation.
